Just went and looked at mine and it definitely looks like a tow hook to me. The tie down hooks I regularly saw all the time were usually steel tabs/flanges or T slots in the frame or subframes. I’d have no second thoughts about using that front hook to pull a Tacoma out of the ditch (although my passenger side one is way beefier) IMO, I don’t think the tow truck driver did anything wrong.

Be honest, if it was sunk down into the mud or snow, and you were there digging and found that, you wouldn’t have hooked on to that spot and pulled? BTW, See You In The Ditch?

Maybe true, but if one of my guys used that hook and it broke, I wouldn’t blame them.....Hooking onto a rad support, tie rod or CV axle? Different story....

I'm not saying I've never "rolled the dice" on transport hooks..when chp is screaming "get that shit off my road" you get creative..you know that. But if it was that hard a pull, it's time to rethink it.hell, I've made people dig out they're own vehicles so I can hook up. Its 6 in one, half dozen in the other..was born and raised in Chicago, couldn't get me to tow on the dan Ryan Expressway..lol. stay safe brother

I wouldn't trust either of these.
They are not actually tested and rated for recovery. They just bolt into the factory spot which wasn't designed for snatch recovery.

Now I know plenty have said they used it and was fine.
But I have also seen post of them failing. After replacing mine with the ARB and discovering a crack in it. No thanks.

The ARB one is beefy as fuck and actually tested and rated.
After seeing failed rigging at work. Its not something I want to see in the bush and definitely not see someone get hurt from it.

I love the ones that are often dumb enough to use improper rigging points are also the ones not even using a proper snatch strap and just using a tow strap, with no dampeners or anything.

Interesting how Toyota doesn’t differentiate between Tow Hooks and Recovery Hooks........both are called the same thing.......Does it say anything in the manual about Transport Hooks?

What's the torque spec on the two bolts used to hold down the factory OR hook? I searched in the factory service manual but can't find it.

On the 2nd gen the passenger side is a tie down point held on by 2 bolts. It's meant to help secure the vehicle during transport. It's not really designed for excessive linear force.

The actual tow/recovery hook is on the driver's side and is welded to the frame. It's designed to withstand considerably more linear force.

    Is the 3rd gen different?

EDIT: Never mind. I just reread the 1st post and took a closer look at the pic. Yeah....that took a fair amount of force to break. Did the tow driver take a bit of a running start at it? And were you in the Taco assisting by trying to drive out as he pulled? That would have helped to take a lot of stress off of the hook.
