I'ma vote for he had just a ball on his bumper (no hitch), had a trailer hooked up, went to get a load of mulch or dirt or something heavy and when they loaded it they just dumped it all at one time and bam! Rear bumper holds just enough to crown the bed and then finally breaks loose and viola!

It folded your bumper to 90° AND crowned the bed? (kinked the frame)?

I'm not a crash test specialist, but it seems like the kind of force required to bend the frame would leave more evidence of the impact...

As I said in my first post, I can see it potentially happening either way, but I don't think any one can say for certain, at least not based on the photo shown.

I agree I was just saying I thought it could happen, I grew up with my family owning a salvage yard and you wouldn’t believe some of the things we’d see and what could happen to cars/trucks in an accident. I was just saying a what might have happened, I think @ToyoTaco25 had a good idea as well. No In my accident it didn’t do anything as bad as that but it did bust the bolts and bent my hitch mount that all had to be replaced.

    Swapped LED reverse lights! haha
Yea, an overloaded hitch might bend down to a 45-degree angle or something, but that whole bumper assembly is bent 90 and the hitch is facing the ground. The last time I saw something like that my cousin was driving his gen 1 taco in front of me at 3:30 am and he SLAMMED on the brakes to avoid killing an already dead raccoon. I was driving a corolla at the time. After everything got fixed it was hilarious. I said "why did you bury the brakes when there's nothing around for ten miles?" and he said "to avoid a huge raccoon!" I looked over and there was a bloated (why it was "huge") dead raccoon in the other lane.

I think the only solution is for OP to hunt the guy down and find out exactly how his truck got bent.

My eyes immediately went to the rear end/bumper first. Rear ended. Happened to me before.
