I am about to buy 2016 Tacoma.
The stickers on the side say TRD Sport, but.....how can I verify which model it actually is?
I was told that it is the TRD Upgrade model with Tow package.
It has the hitch and wiring, but does it have the oil cooler and large alternator?

With all the aftermarket stickers, emblems, grills etc. it is possible to turn SR to TRD with some work.

    Sounds paranoic? I know.....

Is there a web site where I can „run” it?

What colour are the shocks/struts. Yellow and it's an OR. Blue it's a Sport.

You’re overthinking it. No one is going to buy a 2016 and upgrade it from a base to a sport.

The fenders should be color matched, there should be a hood scoop... you’ve already seen the hitch and trailer wiring... If you open up the hood you can see the cooler below the radiator mounted to the frame.

If you’re buying from a dealer they should easily be able to give you a vin print out. Buying private party you can run a car fax.

I run the VIN and it shows as V6 6A.
It does not say anything about towing or blind spot monitoring.
It says Interior TRD cloth and TRD decals factory installed.

You could throw a hood scoop, wheels and a sticker on an sr5 and I'm guessing 9 out of ten people wouldn't be able to tell.

If you look under the section titled "Port or Factory Installed Equipment", there should be a line that says "TO V6 Tow Package" - "Factory".

Are the gauges or stereo any different between the 2?

I think the radio knobs are different. But I imagine if you haven't had one before, you're not going to know.

Sport has the "big" entune screen - I believe the SR5 does not.

    ...stuff
Google pictures of 2016 TRD sport and 2016 SR5. The differences are obvious.

    Sport has hood scoop
Sport has turn signals in mirrors
Sport has LED daytime running lights
Sport has those black seats with the disco ball color light patterns
    Sport has blue shocks/struts
    Sport has a TRD grill
Sport has color matched fender flares and chin

TRD models have push button start with the automatic transmission, Anything lower (SR5, SR) has Key start.
Installing that push button start in a base model would be more work than it is worth. If you see the hood scoop and push button start you have yourself a Sport.

Thank you for all the info.
Based on the above I am at peace that it is TRD Sport. Scoop, push start, blind spot monitor etc.

I will have to look at the radiator tomorrow morning.
The seller said that it has class 4 hitch with sway control.
Why would I doubt the car salesman? ;-)

It has not been suggested yet, but have you checked out a new Tacoma? Prices are usually only a few grand more for new and should be something you check out.
