Can anyone recommend a tow rope or strap to carry along in my Tacoma? I am looking for one strong enough for someone to pull me out of a ditch or other bad spot, or for me to pull someone out (hopefully she'll be nice looking...)

I have some heavy duty climbing-style rope that I bought at Home Depot, and it worked well once when I got in a jam. But I don't want to push my luck with it.

    Thanks.

anything wrong with using a heavy chain? I have some 1.5/2 inch chain I have always carried around. I did use it once to get a buddy out of a ditch. Just got it taught and then slow pulled.

I've thought about getting a recovery strap, but is it any better than my chain? The chain is similar to what is used to strap down front loaders, earth moving equipment on flatbeds.

Chains have their uses but I prefer straps since you can really yank and the strap will stretch a little and buffer the force. I've seen chains break and shatter windshields, and snap sapling trees like they were nothing. From my misadventures ill also say a strap is less likely to damage either vehicle.

chains are ok for tie downs and stump pulling but not vehicle recovery. Chains are ok when used with a strap. Straps absorb the shock while chains have a tendency to break things. I am on my 3rd strap. Fortunately I am normally on the pulling end.

    this...

    Dan gave me a great deal because he had overstock on a 20' and 10' 3" 30k strap bundle. I already had a 30' 3" 30k strap.

OP get yourself at least 30' of 3" strap and some shackles.

Next get yourself a front recovery point because your truck doesn't have a safe one.

Chains are for tractors that's a lot of useless weight to haul a round when a strap will do just as well. You haven't got enough traction to break either one. (unless you take a running start)

I use aircraft cable and it works great. You can get it in almost any length, I have 75ft in the taco and 300ft in a diesel. The only downside is it can't be jerked.

A lot of crap and too much money spent
This is great I was looking into getting myself a recovery strap but wasn't sure which brand or length to get. This helps a lot thanks.

    I carry a 30' 30,000# 3" strap, and I never go off road.

Arb recovery strap... not something you want to cheap out on. Go on YouTube and look at videos of lines snapping...

Edit: 'rope' for you normal guys... navy terminology :)

And that is why when conducting recovery operations, all bystanders back away and get some distance.

If the vehicle towing you out is big enough, a chain will do the job. If it isn't, you want something with "bungee" like capability.

Also do hook to a hitch ball. A friend knew a girl that was killed by a ball that broke loose and came through the back window of the truck.
