If you’re set on a Tundra, stick with the 5.7 8cylinder and not the new ‘22 that has the same engine as a 3rd gen taco.
My buddy traded in his ‘18 Sport for a ‘17 GMC 2500 duramax diesel with twin turbos, to pull a trailer at about 7k+ lbs, won’t be any issues on Hwy or hills.

I have a 19 sequoia I use for towing the car trailer and tows very well with air bags. But want a truck with a solid axle in the rear vs independent and tow slightly more weight.

My buddy is a mechanic and uses diesel trucks, tows equipment well over 10k lbs and why he traded. Whatever truck you decide, I would say diesel with turbos.

The new tundra does not have the same engine as a 3rd gen Tacoma. The only thing they share is a displacement

That's a medium duty chasis tho. I have yet to drive one, but I don't think the turning radius is a good as a 450 Ford, or 4500 Ram. Not a bad looking truck, and it looks better than the Terrestar. I like the lighter International 4300s as far as MDs go. I think International is calling them Max Views or something now. The side widow slopes down like a Ford, and they have a large side mirror.

Rumors swirled around for so long the new gen tundra would be offered in diesel…and nuffin. This may be a mistake that tanks the model.

    I stand corrected.
I relied on my buddy’s description of similarities once deciding against new tundra.

Toyota might be able to take TNGA-F and put eight lug running gear under it with a V8 and diesel option. Sort of like when Toyota takes a five lug and turns it into a six lug 4x4.

Probably not. Diesel is expensive as a fuel and doesn’t blow away gas models like it used to. GM dropped the price of half-ton diesels because of flagging sales.

even the base model tundra engine makes more horsepower and torque than the 3.0 duramax.

When and where peak torque and horsepower hit is the key to the diesel vs gas argument. Your basis of comparison is way off here. Toyota's i-Force output is...
    • i-FORCE 3.5L Twin-Turbo V6: 348 hp @ 5200 rpm, 405 lb-ft.
    • i-FORCE 3.5L Twin-Turbo V6: 389 hp @ 5200 rpm, 479 lb-ft.
    • i-FORCE MAX 3.5L Twin-Turbo V6 Hybrid: 437 hp @ 5200 rpm, 583 lb-ft.
Note the high RPMs. Also note the torque.

Compare that with a 6.7L Cummins or a 6.7L Power Stroke and tell me how a diesel does not blow a gas engine off the planet when it comes to towing? The cummins has 370 HP and 850 LB-ft and the Power Stroke has 450 HP and 935 lb-ft. Hell, even the 3.0 Durmax you call out is 500CC less in displacement and 460 lb-ft of torque at a much lower RPM (i.e. usable, in the 1 - 3 K RPM range... not having to wind the motor up to near red line).

For towing diesel is king, hands down, even with a 3.0 Duramax. Low end torque is king and V6, gas motors are shit on low end torque. Even V8s need a lot of work to put out standard diesel numbers. I'll listen to this argument when I see long-haul rigs swap their Detroit diesels for gas motors.
