Right. Thats what im saying. I dont think the trailer pictured in his post is half that weight? I could be wrong by my 23 foot travel trailer barely weighed that.

You were right at the max tow limit towing on fairly level ground. There are a few gradual inclines along the way but you were probably never over 1000' above sea level and never over 2% grades. I live about 1/2 way between Chattanooga and Atlanta so I know the road well. For every 1000' of elevation gain your engine loses 3% of its power. Get in some real mountains above 5000' elevation and you'll start to realize that you're pushing things a bit. Get into the Rockies and try crossing some mountain passes at 10K'-11K' if you want to see how limited your truck is.

The thing that limits most towing isn't trailer weight, but payload capacity. Most of these trucks have a payload of around 1200 lbs. The tongue weight of a 6800 lb trailer along with a WDH is just under 1000 lbs. That leaves about 200 lbs for a driver. Where people get into trouble is trying to pull a 6000+ lb travel trailer along with 3-4 people and other gear inside the truck.

Modifying the suspension to get the truck to ride level doesn't add anything to the weight limits. It just hides the problem. You were within, or at least very close to the payload and towing capacity. If you were over it wasn't by much. But if you had added 300-400 lbs of gear in the trucks bed along with the 1000 lb tongue weight you would have been well over your payload. What this does is reduce the amount of weight on the front axle and that in turn negatively effects both steering and braking. Changing the suspension so that it rides level doesn't fix the problem.

Do note that the 6800lb capacity is only valid for the 2wd access cab configuration. 4WD DCSB TRD Off-Road is a little less at 6400 with 1175 for payload and 640 for tongue weight.

Nice chart PJnc284. I guess I figured the Off-Road would be maybe 100lbs heavier than the Sport but apparently not.

I towed my boat/trailer that's just under 3000lbs and my DCSB Sport did it perfectly... real happy with those results. Here in AZ it's fairly mountainous with 4-6% grades not uncommon. I prefer a little overkill when it comes to towing in this region effectively and safely. I see some people around AZ really pushing the boundaries sometimes and although it may be technically possible, it's a little sketchy and they aren't doing their vehicles any favors like that. My Ram 2500 tows the loaded travel trailer like a dream at 7200lbs, but I would never consider towing that thing dry (6000lbs) with the Tacoma.

Really? You claim 15 mpg towing almost 7000lbs and figured it would be better? LOL

20180121_153520.jpg i am looking at a towing stablizer system. I was told that as long as my trailer and taco are level before loading i cantow my jeep CJ7. Not worried about the gas mileage i am worried about the crappy rods in Arkansas back to Texas.

They are different stabilizer systems so do your homework and don't cut corners on price. Just make sure the Jeep and the trailer are 6800 lb or less and you shouldn't have any problems.

I give you Atta Boy, that a good amount of weight for a taco:taco:. I have never towed that much weight and if did consistently, I would have a full size. On the other hand I go my truck to work and the Tacoma loves to work.:plane:

You have no problems because that vehicle on the trailer creates very little wind drag.

I'm glad you did well. I wish I got 15mpg when towing...

Interesting that you get 15mpg towing at the speeds you do. A friend has a 17 TRDOR and tows a 20ft. travel trailer (sloped front so not to bad on drag) and only about 5k lbs. He only gets about 12mpg towing at 55mph. Also, when you say 20ft. car trailer, are you talking overall length...my old Carson Car Hauler was considered a 16ft. (based on bed length) and was about 20ft. over all. It only weighed about 1700lbs empty as per the chp scales.

Towing my 2400lb camper trailer was a breeze. No sway control, no weight distribution, just a ball hitch stuck in the 2" receiver and a Tekonsha P3 brake controller.

I got about 15MPG... the trailer is wider than the truck by a few inches, and is tall enough that you can KINDA see over the top, but not well enough to be practical.

If I had to put the hammer down at 60MPH, she'd drop to 3rd and haul ass up to 80MPH like it was nothin'. Plenty of power for the weight I was towing.

I am considering selling the trailer and getting an actual truck camper, though. For my uses, I don't need as much as my camper offers. Plus I got it for a steal, so I could profit a little if I sold it.

Anyway, the Tacoma is a great towing truck, if you aren't towing an assload of weight.
