I'm planning a 1300 mile drive and would like to know if I need to disconnect the drive shaft on my 1998 Tacoma 2WD 5sp manual transmission. I already searched for my question on this forum but could only find information about flat towing and 4wd vehicles. Is there an engine-driven pump that lubricates the transmission when the engine is running or is this only on newer models?

    Thanks!

I would remove it for a trip that long. There is a small bearing in the head gear that the main shaft turns in that may starve for oil in a long distance run because the counter gears are not turning to slosh oil around. All the rest of the stuff (diff and such) will get lube while turning.

Hitch and wiring, aux back-up light, rear strobe lights, radio and underseat sub.
Pull the driveshaft. It will save wear on the trans. The rear diff is self lubricating.
