The wife and I are looking to get a couples' travel trailer to pull around Texas. The total weight on that would be around 4,300 pounds fully loaded. We bought the Tacoma specifically for that. We plan on using it several times a year for long weekends.
The trailer and load you mentioned should be nothing for it.

I’d see if they will let you hook up to the travel trailer and take it for a trip. They probably won’t, but I personally wouldn’t want to pull that amount several times a year with a Tacoma. Yes, it will do it. But I find it less than enjoyable when tow much over 3-3.5k lbs. Then again, I am in East TN, the foothills of the Smoky Mnts. So we have lots of hills and steep grades.

The owners manual does not recommend using S mode for towing. That’s a myth. It recommends using s-mode for engine braking.

Just drive it. You bought an automatic transmission so you didn’t need to worry about crap like this.

Manual says to go no higher than S5.

That’s a common misconception. The manual actually says to use s-mode for engine braking while towing or not towing.

It says “do not use the transmission in D” in order to “maintain engine braking efficiency and charging system performance.” In other words, towing in D results in more strain on your brakes and rotors and less efficient charging. That provision appears in the “Towing Tips” section.

You missed the clause “when using engine braking”.

But why would you not want to use engine braking?

Huh? The point is that when when engine braking you need to restrict it to a lower gear.

Right. But if engine braking is used when towing, and towing in D causes inefficient braking and charging, why would you then ignore the provision in the manual that recommends S5 or lower as a “common misconception”?
