I didn’t mean to say that. I was pointing out that it is (likely) a myth that you have tow in S5/S4 or risk damage to your truck. Toyota only recommends using s-mode when engine braking. I find it somewhat mysterious they they can’t program the ecu to handle this situation, but perhaps there is a hidden challenge or they don’t think the risk is high enough to spend money on a solution.

Oh, I've only towed once with my truck. Same size trailer. I found ECT and sport mode with the transmission worked the best. The truck's transmission really struggled which gear to be in leaving it in D vs S. :notsure:

Edit: I believe the owners manual states to leave it in S4 or S to keep transmission temps down.

Do what you like best. Just don’t worry about blowing up your tranny.

I have a 6mt now, but I had a 2016 with an auto. My boat and trailer are about 2300 lbs. With the auto I would just hit ECT and forget about it. There aren’t any mountains where I live. The 6mt involves constant shifting between 4-6. Enjoy your auto. It takes care of this for you.

The TC can unlock in any gear which is why it's important to actually monitor the temps under a heavy load

I don't have a need to tow anything else or anything anytime soon. If that ever changes I'd probably upgrade to a full size. These trucks are definitely capable, but it's not ideal for me.

    No problem.

About 100lb aircraft seats in about 200lb crates. Shipped to Hamburg for an exposition just prior to the COVID mess. They had to come right on back. Kinda sucked, but it was fun making the crates.

I read the post, got wondering, went back and zoomed in, thought "those are big crates??"...

I know the feeling. What's in the box!? :D

They were big. Nothing cheap and standard would work for the height. The bases were a plinth for the display. I'm just happy that they survived for reuse next time.

Hauled a full UHaul 6x12 750 miles with part of that being through the Denver area.
Use ETC and S4 and it will be fine. It will drink some fuel I averaged about 12mpg for the entire trip and ran at 75MPH accoss NE and parts of CO.
If you try and use 5 or 6 or D it will shift constantly.

I’ve found the same on flat ground with my travel trailer. S5 is fine for flat roads up to about 60-65 mph. Above that speed, S5 shifts constantly between 4 and 5.

I do like S5 when I’m towing flat (Indiana/Midwest) at lower speeds. Haha
