I'm just stating my comfort level with the truck from a towing standpoint. I would not feel comfortable towing my ~2800 lb car (probably 5k with trailer) any sizable distance with the truck. To ME, that puts too much strain on the Tacoma's frame and drivetrain. I'd be worried about my brakes also, even with a controller. Will I use it to tow it around town and on short trips? Sure. I just personally feel that Toyota was a little overzealous with the 6,500 lb rating on a day in, day out basis.

Its funny with a name like "thinkingman" and you let the fanboys and koolaid drinkers make your decisions? This is a quote form a webcite about the Chevy Colorado.

"The company says those who wanted to tow more than 4000 pounds were stepping up to full-size pickups, so it lowered the maximum trailer weight to gain some ride and handling benefits."

Maybe you should have went with a Colorado. They are in Tacoma's class. Or as the statement says above IF you are going to consistently tow over 4,000 lbs you should have bought a full size truck. Thats apparently what most consumers do. However for a mid size truck to be able to handle the full size load every once and awhile even for short distances is pretty good. As many have said as long as your SET UP RIGHT and you arent stupid you can tow 6,000lbs with a Tacoma. If you are trying to back a 6,000 pound trailer into water with high winds with a vehicle weighing less than 4,000lbs than you are disqualified on the stupidity factor

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
I think you are little overreacting. I rent this mini excavator from Home depot which is with trailer near 6000lb I never had problem towing it and I have to go 30 miles to home with it over the hills. It tows and does it with out any problems. Trailer has own brakes so no issues with braking either. I drive on 4 as per manuall and not have experienced any problems pulling it. I think its funny that midsize truck can pull that with out issues where normally one would bring full size truck. First time I rented this I went into argument with the guy who insisted I rent their full size to tow that thing... naaaah :D

    NICE.

I find my taco tows ok. My biggest gripe would have to be that the heavier the trailer the more it seems to push around the truck cause its so light. That's why I like to load up the bed with firewood or my atv and then tow my 3,000 lb boat or snowmobiles...it tows better loaded. For a 6 and the other daily driver benefits its perfect. GO get a Chebby or Ferd mid-size that can do what these can do..oh you can't and the Nissan Fonty was my second choice. :D

Give me a diesel option and I'm set!! Diesel! Diesel! More tow and more mpg...all day it would sell here in the USA

I'm surprised he even let you tow it with the tacoma. Usually they are sticklers about that sort of thing for liability reasons. They won't even let you hitch it up.

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
Porsche and BMW have considerably higher tow ratings than our big, burly, he-man trucks?

The Porsche Cayenne apparently does, with BMW it depends on the Tacoma you're comparing it against. The Tacomas with the tow package are rated higher, otherwise BMW is higher.

anyhow, part of the reason for my t100 ownership, is it was white knuckle towing my dads jeep with the old truck

    tn_S5033000_c51dffa8915f8388f435c8d61dbc8eb7cace10b8.jpg

99 mazda b2500, 4cyl, tow rating of 1400 to 1700 depending on who you ask, im guessing a 59 cj5 jeep on 33s probably weighs close to 3000 lbs.
