    Oh ok I get it.

Expect the truck to meet spec and all bets are off.

Better go back to a domestic diesel that are expected to perform as claimed.

Wait, that doesn't sound right does it?

You said you can tow going 70 its just in high rpm's ...how is that not working as advertised especially when the engine doesn't really make power until after 3500 rpm's....

What bet's are off? The truck went the speed you wanted it to while towing. It's not going to drive like a heavier diesel truck.

You guys think I wanted to get diesel performance from this truck.

    I did not.

I wanted acceptable performance from following the specification the manufacturer provided.

The mfg did not say "TOW ONLY IN THE SLOW LANE 10 MPH UNDER POSTED SPEED LIMIT, AND NEVER EXCEED 50% OF TOW RATING"

I cant find that verbiage in my manual?

Doesn't the owners manual talk about the truck handing and driving differently while towing?

I bought the trailer to haul my Rzr.

Machine is 1800 pounds, trailer 3100. Both under the 6400 rating.
It's so underpowered with the empty trailer I cant imagine adding the machine

You said the speed limit is 70 and you do 70, you just have to be in a lower gear with higher rpms.... How is that not doing what it's supposed to do?

Did Toyota make any mpg claims when towing?

So I tow an 18' enclosed Jayco, dry weight around 3,000 and loaded with water and gear around 4,000. I was disapointed in how the truck towed at first but after talking to a lot of people that tow a lot more than I do I realized that the truck was towing just fine and I just needed to adjust my expectations. I tow in 4th gear (mine's automatic) and average 10.5 to 11 mpg's. When I first started towing I expected to leave it in 5th or 6th and be able to maintain 75 but that's just not how towing goes, no matter the truck (unless you tow with a diesel of course, they'll tow anything). Also, I was worried about damaging the engine leaving it in 4th gear for four hours at a time. But as others have said, this engine likes high RPM's. I have also found that speed makes a huge difference. When I'm getting 10.5 to 11 mpg's I'm trying to maintain 70-75. If I drop it to 60ish I'm getting 15-16 even while towing. The other day I was towing my trailer with a bad spare tire on it so I was only going 40 and I was getting 18-20 mpg's. I was shocked. Don't be afraid to hold 5,000 RPM's going up a long hill, your engine can take it.

Are you being serious? Lol man first guy is recommending I research the entire Sedan lineup at Toyota for tow ratings.
This guy is suggesting that they mention in the manual a severe overstatement of tow limits.

Meanwhile they feverishly like each others posts.

What about the truck? Do you have steel bumpers and big tires on it?

Especially if you say the engine is underpowered (which it is)...or that the auto transmission sucks.

It amazes me that people read a tow rating and interpret it as "no loss in performance up to that weight" rating.

That said, my 3000 pound (wet) camper does exactly what I wanted it to. The only time it sucks is if I have a moderate headwind.
