What exactly are you hauling? I like to do woodworking and finish carpentry as a hobby... I usually only have boards and sheets of ply in mine. I like the length and the height. Plus when I get done coming home I can lock it up and unload it anytime

    Rain Visors,

I do house flips, so I keep a wide variety Of things. So table saw, tile saw, hand tools for Electric, plumbing, Miter saws. Nailers and compressor. What usually gets me is having tons of materials from past jobs. Which I never really benefit from. So if I stick to the tools, and really make sure what I’m loading is all I need. I should be ok. I’ve got three cabinets that are 2’x3’x6.5’. That house prettt much everything already. I’m going to keep the weigh over the wheels. And I should be good to go. It will be nice having the extra room.

Yup... over the wheels and a little forward. Balance the load and you'll never have an issue.

Heaviest stuff over the axle... lighter stuff forward, and little stuff in the back.

    Rain Visors,
Yea I’m going trough my stuff, 30 tubes of caulk, scrap, random electrical and plumbing parts. I’ve found that I rarely ever go back into the stash, and it just builds up over time. I’ve been making a habit of calling for one big delivery of material and just returning what I don’t need. I don’t need to be a rolling hardware store.

55mph is the safest speed to tow. 4th insures he has enough torque to pull smaller hills without downshifting constantly.

    Rain Visors,
I’ve been towing a long time- whatbhear and how fast I can figure out. But I’m glad to see I should be able to tow my trailer. Trading would have been a pain.

Vehicles with an automatic transmission: To maintain engine brak-
ing efficiency and charging system performance when using engine
braking, do not use the transmission in D. If in the S mode, the
transmission shift range position must be in 5 or lower.
    ● Vehicles with a manual transmission: To maintain engine braking
efficiency and charging system performance when using engine
braking, do not use the fifth gear (5-speed manual transmission) or
the sixth gear (6-speed manual transmission).

Doesn't need to use S4 per the manual either if we are being exact. I use S4 myself since it keeps it closer to the power though.

Toyota recommends that the vehicle-trailer speed limit is 65 mph
(104 km/h) on a flat, straight, dry road. Do not exceed this limit, the
posted towing speed limit or the speed limit for your trailer as set
forth in your trailer owner’s manual, whichever is lowest. Instability
of the towing vehicle-trailer combination (trailer sway) increases as
speed increases. Exceeding speed limits may cause loss of control.

What the manual says about towing speed just so you know I'm not yanking your chain.

doesnt exactly state the Manual Transmission is design to handle heavy towing in overdrive either.

Yeah it says not to use 6th with either tranny. Which most people familiar with towing already know. And heaven help you trying to tow 6th gear if it's windy with the auto... You might go slow enough to be pushed backwards.

I usually tow in S4 and around 60-70. I'm not in a rush when towing. That's just my situation though. I will say that at 65 in S4 even pulling a trailer, the truck really wants to take off since your right at the doorstep of vvti kicking in.

Hey Fellas, this is a numbers game. Our trucks have factory ratings for the Unladen Weight, Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, Combined Vehicle Weight Rating (truck and trailer), Tongue Weight, and other critical spec's. If I were the OP, or any other person interested in towing a load, I would dive into the owner's manual and read the spec's on the driver's door jamb decal for that specific vehicle.

I read towing posts talking about this and that, including the exterior dimensions of a trailer, where items should be placed inside a given trailer, and what my buddy once towed. Do some research and keep yourself safe. And keep the rest of the folks on the road safe. Please.

    Rain Visors,
I appreciate the sentiment and links, believe me safety is my number one concern, I love myself. The load is going to be light. There is a lot i can get rid of.

If OD in a MT was bad to tow in, over the road semi trucks wouldn't have them.

I tow in 5th and 6th all the time because I can feel what the motor is able to handle. If I'm empty I'll run in 6th. If I'm loaded or it's windy and the motor is bogging down I'll top out at 65 in 5th, or 2600 RPM. This speed seems to be optimal for power, speed, and fuel mileage.

Remember these are double OD trucks. Based on what Lt posted, you can clearly use the lower OD gear to tow. It says it without saying it... don't bog the motor down.
