Towing boat

Is it ok to tow a 1500lb boat in overdrive or do I have to put in in 4th. 08 v6 with the towing pkg

 

from what i have heard the OD gear is lightened and should not be used. heat is an issue as well if the trans is constantly searching from 5 to 4 and back then the temp may go well above normal operating temps. maybe @gearcruncher can confirm

On the flat roads you will be fine in 5th in hilly country drop to 4th.
A lot of people tow at very high speeds. It's counter productive
Hard on everything. Crappy mileage

 

If you plan to tow , at least use something like a scan guage or ultraguage to monitor your transmission temps .
Start with 4th gear ( direct drive) and monitor your temps . Keep the temps below 200 .
If your tow is light enough , select overdrive and continue monitoring your trans temps .
The converter clutch is going to lock and unlock in 5th gear far more than it ever will in 4th creating all kinds of additional heat .
The magic heat number is 200 . Any hotter and you have to start looking at a larger cooler or pull over and let your truck run in park until the transmission cools down .
Do not wait for the transmission temp idiot light that pops up at 305 degrees . You have cooked all your fluid by then .
