I bought a new 2017 taco with the tow package. I took my 18.5 foot fiber glass boat to the lake approximately 60 miles away. Everything was working great during the trip. The estimated weight of boat, trailer and gear is 4800lbs. When I finished boating I pulled my boat out of the lake. I am very disappointed in how difficult it was to get the boat out of the water. I could smell my clutch burning because I had to ride it to maintain high enough rpms to get it out of the water and up the 150 foot ramp. The next day I used my wife's path finder which has a lower tow rating. I put it in low and 4x4 and it pulled it easily out. I had my taco in 4x4 the traction control off and it barely got it out. The ramp had a moderate slope I would estimate it as average. Does anyone have any ideas why it may be struggling to get the boat (which is well under the max tow weight) out. I would hate to think I may have the wrong pickup for my boat, especially considering I love the truck otherwise and it's only 2 months old.

Could just be that the clutch hasn't "broke in" yet, that and a little more practice with it might be all it takes.

Does putting the truck in four low help low end torque and if so do you know if it is safe to back up in four low. Some old pickups were not supposed to be used in reverse in four low.

I assume you have a manual transmission, I have an auto and don't have experience with manuals in these trucks. My boat is about the same size as yours and I've never even used 4 wheel drive to pull it out, much less 4 low.

Was the pathfinder a manual also? Did you have the Taco in 4 low? Boat ramps can be challenging with a clutch. I just pull a wave runner and slip the clutch a lot but don't have 4 low. Some ramps are more steep than others.

If you try 4 low it's probably a good idea to only use it going forward and not reverse because turning in low can be bad on pavement

4 low would have easily pulled this boat out. The power range is in the higher rpms which is regretable but still easily doable especially in low range.

I would definitely use 4 lo specially when pulling the boat out of the water these motors have relatively low tourque compared to its weight , but as long as u don't turn the wheel much you should be fine ... also I have a 2017 with a manual trans with 15,000 miles and am already expeirenceing a slipping clutch ..taking it in Thursday so hopefully they'll be able to find out the problem and fix it but I'm not holding my breathe . Expecting them to tell me it's not covered by warranty even though I reported a problem at my 10,000 service . If I'm not completely pissed off I'll try to update my situation . If I'm stuck I'm going with a stage 3 clutch a supercharger and a few other things to help with power. Still love the truck just stupid problems I hope can be resolved
