I had a 96 taco that I regularly towed to my deer lease in Mexico, no problems. I bought a 2001 DC Tacoma last year and never realized they couldn't be towed. The wheels won't track when you make a turn. I've been trailering it with no other option. According to a mechanic, the engine has to be running for the wheels to track.
Thinking about selling the 2001 and buying a 2015, 16 or 17 late model taco. does anyone know if the newer models can be towed or do they also have to be trailered?
Thanks for any advice or comments.

About 99% sure they would also need to be trailered. I think it’s more flat towing can damage the driveline.

I know in my owners manual is says it can not be flat towed due to drive line damage. Don't know if that's a 4x4 only restriction though.

I think you need to disconnect the driveshaft if you want to flat tow.

The drive line has never been an issue after towing the 96 taco thousands of miles. Put the 4wd in neutral, tranny in neutral and move on. The issue is tracking, the front wheels won't track on my 2001 unless the engine is running. I was just curious if the new tacos have the same vacuum system on the steering.

I don’t believe the newer trucks have the same neutral option for the transfercase. There is only 2H-4H-4L.

Edit: I have no idea about the steering lol.

I believe you have a manual transfer case, and newer Tacoma’s don’t, so you won’t be flat towing a newer Tacoma.

Tow dolly and disconnect rear drive shaft or trailer I’m guessing is about your best options

Thanks guys, that's what I was wondering, not what I was hoping for however. Trailering a rig down 15 miles of the worst road in Mexico is not fun. I guess if it was easy everybody would be doing it, not to mention dodging the cartels. LOL
