One difference is the amount of weight over the front wheels, the I4 is alot lighter, more weight over the steering wheels is more control. Also considerations like less engine braking from the I4. I wouldn't tow over max, you can get sued and arrested if there is an accident, but you do you OP.

I think the shorter wheelbase is also factor. A guy I work with has a Jeep, that things rating is higher if you have the 4door version.

"Safe" as in guaranteed not to crash and burn or break something? Where in the specs is the word "safe" used?

Legal? From experience? The only legality I found is if you cause an accident and you exceeded the gcvw. The 2009 tacoma 4x4 single cab has a gcvw of 8000lbs and its curb weight is 3200-3500lbs . If you can do simple math. It's not illegal to tow 4200lbs with my truck

I thought towing capacity essentially stood for the “safe” amount of weight you can tow up to? The first thing i see when i google towing capacity definition : “Towing capacity is the most weight your car can pull both legally, and safely. Towing too much weight can lead to your trailer swinging, and pulling your vehicle out of control.”

Seems like by definition, safe is implied. In fact every single link i see uses the word safe lmao.

Sure, in an accident, or if you happened to get pulled over at least by CHP they take all that stuff very seriously. If you tow over your TOW RATING you’re asking for trouble man.

I’ve been stopped near scales just with my f250 because they want to see if my setup requires a cdl but I’m right under the limit for one.

All I’m saying is go for it if you want, but I sure wouldn’t. It’s not worth the legal risk.
