Here is the small toy hauler we tow with my 05 tacoma pre-runner with factory tow pkg. All loaded the camper is just under 4,000 lbs. My truck does fine,But I would never do mountains or long hauls with my rig. All our trips are about 1.5 hours away so all is good. Youl want to also get a sway control set up and the prodigy brake controller. We will be getting a tundra with the 4.6 V8 in September...But were also keeping the Taco!

Firestone Air Bag Suspension with inflation control in cab. Tecumsah electric brake controller
I just got my 2017 Dbl cab with the tow package. I bought the Aspen lite trailer which is rated at 3500#. I have the Tecumsah brake controller and it is great. I tried towing with just stock suspension and it just had far to much weight on the hitch of the truck; dropping about 5 inches with the trailer completely new. After reading on the forum about other people putting in the Air suspension I decided on the one people have been talking about, the Firestone Air bag suspension with the switch to control the inflation and deflation of the bags installed. IMO it was worth every dime. I could have saved not putting the controller in for the inflation and deflation but I did not want to piddle around under the truck doing it. The difference in handling of my truck and the sway is like night and day. I am in Texas and the roads are pretty flat but it is windy.

I am still getting used to the difference in the RPM towing and not towing. The truck seems pretty happy doing 60 /65 plus/minus 2500 RPM. I haven't left it in 4th just leave it in drive but it is not hunting as long as I stay around the 60 MPH range I have not done any hill country to speak of so that might be where I would need to use the 4th gear. Most of my trips are within a 200 mile radius so I am ok taking my time. Fuel mileage does drop from about 23 on the hwy normal to about 12 towing. Oh well, it is what it is.

Must be something wrong with your suspension because it should not squat from such a light load. My 27ft weighs 5500 lbs and my bumper drops 2" without the WDH. I have stock suspension and can't imagine what kind of load would make it drop 5". Just a side note: my WDH brings my bumper back up 1 1/2" and pushes the front bumper down an inch.

@Suncat, I hope you're monitoring your transmission temps towing that trailer in D.

I just bought a 23' Aero Cub. Dry weight is 3,320 lbs, GVWR is 4,720. Hitch weight is 320. I have a Primus IQ brake controller and an Eaz-lift weight distribution hitch with sway control. I haven't gone anywhere with it yet, just towed it about 20 miles from the guy's house I bought it from. Tranny temps got up to 200 briefly, but that was lugging it up a loooong steep hill.

I didn't read the other posts but we towed up to 6500 with our 2005 double cab. We did not have factory tow package so we did have a tranny and oil cooler installed and air bags in the rear to help. Truck towed surprisingly well, stopping the trailer could've been better, but you'll be fine. Just take your time going up big grades
