So I just got a 2020 Tacoma, 4x4 v6 with the xp predator package. The dealership said it had a high towing capacity. I want to pull a 5200 lb camper next month. I searched my VIN. It is a SR. General SR info lists tow capacity at 3500, and often says, unless it is the tow package. The truck has the hitch and everything. I searched the VIN on Toyota’s website and it lists some info about the 4x4 stuff but never mentions towing capacity.

how do I find out what the towing capacity actually is? I live in the Lowcountry in S.C. and will be traveling completed on flat ground. I don’t want to get myself in trouble towing a 5200 camper though.

Any advice or insight on how to nail down exactly what I can pull in this truck. I assumed the v6 engine would ensure it could pull a high capacity, but the official listings just say “SR” but without any further info.
Thanks in advance for any help

"high capacity" is not an actual rating, this is a small truck. 5,200 dry and unloaded is full size territory when fully loaded. Keep in mind you don't want to be towing anywhere near capacity,,, how much of that capacity is a hotly debated subject, so here come the opinions. Either way, look at getting a good weight distribution hitch and brake controller.

The VIN tag in the driver's door jamb has your specific truck's actual capacity. Also figure your hitch weight, and account for frontal drag,,,, towing a large travel trailer safely and comfortably has more factors then listed weight capacity.

You can tell if it has the towing package by looking behind the front grill. Tow package trucks have an envelope-size transmission radiator in front of the main radiator.

I believe they got rid of those on the 2020 models

Some 2020s have them still, mine does but I know don't. Either way, not surefire way to determine if it has the towing package anymore.

Opinions are like assholes but mine is that trailer is too big for a Taco.

Even if you do have the tow package, you better purchase a brake controller or you will never stop that trailer. lol.

And agreeing with @RX1cobra, a 5200lb dry trailer is HEAVY for a Tacoma. What trailer exactly? Interested in seeing what the GVW is.

The Tacoma is the wrong tool for the job if you want to regularly tow that weight.

That's a pretty heavy trailer at 5,200 lbs and I'm assuming that's dry weight. Will the Tacoma pull it? Yes. Will it be an enjoyable experience? Probably not. As others have said, check the door jamb for the towing capacity. Get a good weight distribution hitch and a trailer brake controller and plan to drive slow and steady.

Here is the door Jam. I see the gross vehicle weights and stuff, but I don’t see anything about towing.

Is that 5200 lbs before you load up water and all your other stuff?

as long as your GVWR, payload and GCWR are in spec you will be fine. for that heavy i would get a brake controller and weight distribution hitch which those things are possibly required by law in your state. either way as long as you're following your state laws and your weights are within spec then you will be fine. remember you have a trailer and drive like you have one and you will be fine. and remember you will probably go over your payload before anything else.

Total weight is 5200 with everything. The camper has electric brakes on it it says.

gotcha. I’m just confused on what those numbers mean. If the gross vehicle weight is 5600, I thought that meant total truck weight plus any trailer needs to equal 5600. I thought there was another weight indicator that would be listed for towing.

I looked up your vin, you have the tow package.

Towing still isn't going to be enjoyable for that trailer.

Sweet. So that means 5200 total weight should fall within my trucks towing capacity ?

Good to know. I believe there was an entire thread on it recently and that was the conclusion since all TRD models are supposed to have the tow package standard.
