yes your GVWR would be the total weight of your truck, passengers, hitch weight ETC. gross combined weight rating (GCWR) would be your total combined weight of the truck, trailer. basically your payload of 990lbs is how much weight you can add to your truck before you will hit the GVWR. most trailers are somewhere in the 10%-15% range for the hitch weight. so we can guess maybe 500-600lbs for that trailer. that leaves you enough room for 2 adults before your over payload. this is where things like the weight distribution hitch will come in to play. as well as a brake controller and when getting up towards the maximum towing capacity you can add airbags or AAL. don't forget ETC on and S4 when towing! good call on the tow mirrors from YF_Ryan

Is it through a rental company, or just a random person? I only ask, as most places require your vehicle to have a trailer rating that matches or exceeds the trailers GVWR. 5200 dry is probably around 7000 or more GVWR for the trailer, which is above the max for a Tacoma of 6800 (depending on package of truck).

check your local laws i believe most states require a brake controller above 3500lbs.

It is from an individual. He just said make sure your truck can pull a total weight of 5200. Which brought me here.

so back to the original question now that someone determined that this truck chase the tow package. Because everything I read was that a taco with a tow package can pull 6k. Can I pull this thing?

You can pull it, it's not going to be fun. This has been stated numerous times.

It will tow it yes. But you have to AT LEAST purchase a brake controller. The truck is wired with a seven pin plug to run the trailers lights as it sits currently, but you have to buy a brake controller and plug it in under your dash (it's super easy) for the trailer's brakes to function, which you ABSOLUTELY must have or stopping that trailer will be extremely scary/life threatening.

you will definitely need a weight distributing hitch as well. according to the sticker you have 930lb cargo capacity. anything you put on the truck (bed mat, armor, trailer hitch etc...) counts against that total as well as tongue weight. t/w is 10 - 15% of the trailer weight. 5200lb X .15 = 780 lb. that leaves you with 150lb for you, passengers and all gear and nothing in the trailer. look in the towing forum for the towing bible.

My 2020 has the trans cooler. I tow a trailer with my miata racecar on it every other week, no issues.

The biggest issue in my mind is having 700+ lbs on the hitch. You’ll be dragging your tail. When you add in coolers, people and dogs you’re going to be over payload capacity.

I dont know what the towing capacity difference is between the gen 2 and 3. i have a 2015 and i can honestly say it will do it no problem. if on stock leafs it will sag....a lot. i towed a trailer hauling a load of oak timbers which weighted about 5600 lbs +/- 500 lbs. the trailers didnt have brakes either. it was VERY noticeable and would not recommend it on stock suspension im running +500lb leafs. your going to have to use your motor a lot to control that thing and youll notice it going up hills. towing capacity for a 2015 is 5600 lb and the trailer should have brakes at that weight.

I can see him changing his mind.
You can pull it yes, should anything happen, it will pull you too, after all it's bigger than your truck.

    Forget the towing bologna.
    Let's see the Miata! :bananadance::burnrubber::jellydance:

(And the trailer he is using weighs about 2 Miatas)

And a miata on a flat deck trailer is an entire different ballgame to towing a brick. I tow, including flat deck car trailer, about 4200 very regularly and I'm comfortable with it. Towing my sister's 7x14 enclosed trailer EMPTY is miserable. Between the drag on the front of the trailer, the fact I can't see around it well (even with tow extensions), and that any gust of wind tries to knock it off the road and pull me with it. Sucks. Open trailer, EASY.

Rent a real truck already rigged with the proper gear to tow it with.

You're going to have to spend some bucks to get yours prepped, and you may never need that hardware again.

Might be cheaper than brake controller, weight distribution hitch, and tow mirrors.

@Zachdrescher , please know we aren't trying to be rude on this thread. Just realistic. The Tacoma is an awesome truck, but just isn't made for heavy towing. We want you to be safe, and not hurt you or your brand new truck. You coming to Tacomaworld was a great idea, and we hope to keep seeing you on here. This is a great community and the people here have a lot of good advice and experience we can all learn from. Be safe out there!!

also some of these aren't just suggestions. i believe a majority of the states in the U.S require brake controllers under 3500lbs.
