What is the towing capacity for the 2015 Toyota tacoma with the factory towing package? I purchased a horse trailer and the truck seems to be sitting low at the back... The horse trailer is 3500 lb without horses

Ideally you want 10% of the combined trailer weight on the tongue.
This rarely happens in the real world.

The answer to your problem is likely with a load distributing hitch.
Whether of not the horse trailer is compatible with one? I don’t know.

There are other options, none that are “totally correct”.
Better leafs spring or a helper springs would help.
Possibly even air bags. ( can be adjusted according to load )

Honestly its good to do homework but you need to do more than just asking a question online.

See your mechanic and see whats up. Also they will explain the tow capacity of the truck properly to you.

A tacoma is not ideal for a horse trailer

    That’s probably the best answer.
I hesitated to say it. Mostly because of all the people that will chime in with what they’ve pulled.
    And how it’s just fine.

    I have pulled “a lot”. But I won’t say how. :D

My record is 1100kg of dirt in my F150 8ft box. Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge mistake, but the air ride compensated for the weight and I didnt realize it until we got to the scale haha.

Don't forget the rated tow capacity is for a truck equipped with a trailer brake controller and a trailer with brakes, if your not using trailer brakes your tow capacity is much less.

Same here except it was a long bed Ford Ranger.
Just over 1 Ton. I think it was 1.06 to be exact.

I was young. Maybe 19 at the time. It was my Fathers truck. He is a Truck Driver, so I used his truck for the bigger bed. The front tires would squeal around curves. No weight on the front end. I will never forget it. And yes, I did bust the right rear shock.

I called to tell him how the ride home was sketchy.
He asked how much it was I had gotten. Needless to say, He wasn’t too happy.
But he didn’t get mad either. He’s the one that found the busted shock.

He still has the truck. Last time I drove it it had 267k on it.

Done by me: decals, plastidip, and vinyl. More to come. Not done by me: Icon front/rear suspension; Total Chaos UCA’s; Method wheels/34” Falken tires; Prinsu cab rack/LED light bar; V1Air compressor piped to a 2.5 gallon underbed tank; Pelfreybilt front/rear bumpers; Smittybilt front winch.
I’m dumb enough to attempt stuff but smart enough to try to learn from it, does that count? The bottom ones definitely weren’t just fine though.

I’d be more comfortable pulling a 3500# horse trailer than two of the loads I have, but I definitely don’t think I’d put a/horses in on top of that. Animals aren’t static loads after all.

Easy loads I’ve pulled on a tandem axle 14’ flat bed:
-Multiple loads of hardwood lumber, probably 2500-3000# combined average, no problems; one of them a 200 mile trip, side roads/interstate up to 70mph, max grade 3-4% for less than a mile or two.

Middling load I’ve pulled on the same trailer:
-3500# combined of woodworking tooling, no problems there; side roads/interstate up to 70mph, max grade 3-4% for less than a mile or two.

Retarded loads that were out of necessity at the time, but would never do again, on the same trailer:
-roughly 3500# by itself milling machine, head/ram separated and close to the tongue; not horrible
-roughly 4500# by itself milling machine, head/ram separated and close to the tongue, body over the axles; sketchy as fuuuu even nice and slow.

Both of the last were side roads and max speeds of 25-30, max grade 3-4% for less than a mile, on a total trip of about 25 miles. The axles struggled more than the trailer itself. Unloading them was even more fun.

It seems like growing up on/around poorish farms, we just learned to make due with what we had available, and drive more cautiously if need be. If something was definitely too much, we’d find someone to help us.

And reality sets in, it’s going to suck with just one horse on board, 2 horses is asking for trouble.

I've towed a 2 horse trailer with one horse in it a couple of times and I don't think i ever will again. Just feels like too much for the truck.
