Quick bragging story while at the same time question/concern...

I was coming home from vacation with my girlfriend about a week ago. As we came around a bend on a highway around 23:00hrs, where speed limit is 65mph, there was a est. 2002 Ford F-350 Dually long bed, big as hell edition, broken down in my lane on a two-lane highway. There was no shoulder, and the night was especially dark. I saw him luckily in a timely manner, his hazards on and he was waving a flash light towards me. Long story short after nearly killing myself and two others in a collision, I turned around and offered help.

I stopped (opposite side had a shoulder) and offered my two cents on what was wrong-all while debating in the back of my head whether I want/capable to move this boat and potentially save a catastrophe from occurring.

Long story short, I asked him if he had chains and before I could finish asking, he had them out. I took the truck for a short drive to U-turn and put it in 4wd due to it towing up-hill and on gravel-ly-ish surfaces. I couldn't believe when I hooked up to this 9,000 pd earth mover, but at this point it was too late to back out lol. I was at this point facing incoming traffic and had to move quickly. Luckily not many people are on the road at 11pm on a Sunday.

It moved it without any hesitation or struggle up-hill, about 100 feet to the other side of the road's shoulder. If I went the downhill direction, the tow would've been about a mile until a safe point to stop and had some up-hill as well. Picture a bowl..well we were right before where it first gets flat (if that makes any damn sense). Anyways, obviously it was heavy but we moved along just as I would moving my landscaping trailer (3k-ish pounds)...except for one thing. As I came to a stop in a safe place to park the Ford, I smelled a very awful smell. I mean burn-your-nose-hairs awful. My girlfriend even kind of chuckled to herself afterwards and said "why does it smell like rotten broccoli?". And that is exactly what it smelled like...the nastiest cooked broccoli smell you can imagine, like it was sitting in the trash for days and your dog ate it, then puked it up-that smell. At least this guy wouldn't let me leave without shoving a $100 bill in my window before driving off (don't mind if I do ).

So the question is, now that it is a week later and I'm $100 richer, everything still works as it should including 4wd, and no broccoli :broccoli:. The Tacoma has 10k miles on it, is a 6speed (clutch smell(?)), and obviously 4wd. What in God's name did I smell? My buddy who is ASE mechanic said it had to be a combo of things getting really hot (clutch, 4wd, exhaust) and burning. I got underneath and everything looks like it rolled off the assembly line. Anyone else have an idea?

Probably roasted the clutch. It'll be fine, you just shortened its life some.

You said you have a MT 6 speed right? Were you slipping the clutch to get it going??

    Beautiful rig, congrats!
As for the smell I'd say either clutch or the smell was coming from a bearing in the other rig, might be what disabled it?
But either it does smell horrible.

Glad you was able to help in spite of has been said here so much about the lack of power on the truck, because my V-6 thinks its a V-8! lolo!

    Cheers!

Truck in gear hard to slip the clutch unless your foot was on the pedal for some reason... AKA "riding the clutch" that will do it.

How did you get OR wheels on your TRD Sport??

Burning clutch has a very distinct smell, ever smelled it? I wouldn't say rotten broccoli. Your drivetrain was working mighty hard to tow 9000 lbs uphill. Id say it was a combo of oils getting hot especially since you were already at operating temp. 100ft though shouldn't have done any permanent damage.

Thanks brotha! It's too stock for my taste right now though. I'm currently in the market for suspension and wheels because I really dislike the stock OR wheels. I'd also like to have some fun this winter when I head up in the mountains...Maryland winters suck.

Yeah I'm familiar and definitely didn't ride the the clutch. I have a friend like that and I cringe when he drives his car.

I don't know man, it literally just went lol. Definitely wasn't a normal take off with the expected struggle but nothing out of the ordinary. I guess tacomas are mightier than Toyota advertises.

It's a factory TRD OR, I just put a Hawaiian trd sport decal on there because I have native Hawaiian in my family's blood and the sticker is rad.
