I think you have misread something as I don't recall saying anything about that being as fast as my truck would run. I was just announcing the speed and rpm in a particular gear in my 3rd gen in relation to the second gen.

You are right though about dropping down a gear. I've had my truck towing up a 10% grade at highway speed with no issue. Rev's? Tons of them, but I never had any ground speed issues. It certainly didn't do that in 5th though.

I guess mine isn't as much true stop and go as much as very slow and go traffic where you're fluctuating between about 5 and 25 mph because of traffic. I can feel the whole truck kind of jerk forward as if it is getting too much power to be smooth.

Anyone know if Toyota is planning on dumping the "designed for economy" gutless 3.5 Atkinson/Otto hybrid V-6 in the current Taco? I know the ladies love these engines in their Lexus RX SUVs and of course the Prius. Just wondering if Toyota has plans to put a V-6 truck engine in the Tacoma, or something similar to the current 2.7 liter truck engine I have in my Taco, only with a bit more hp/torque. That would be sweet!

    Thoughts?

    From just one page back:
The Taco 3.5l is Toyota's big motor going forward. The TT version, from Lexus, will be the top motor in the next Tundra.

Beyond that, do a bit more reading. Unless you want an LS swap. Because car motors rule?

The Gr V6 motor will be gone in the next generation. Toyota is making all new engines across the board.

Do you have some info on that because that is not what I have heard from a couple respectable sources?

I am hoping they will use the naturally aspirated V35A engine.

That is likely for the Tundra as the big motor.

There is doubt if the Taco will get an FI. That might be the real thing for the next gen Pro if they do it at all.

The Tundra would get the turbo version of that motor. The Tacoma could also get a turbo version of the A25A

We'll see what drops in the coming couple of years. My guess would be that whatever is in the new T4R will be what is in the Taco.

Glad we could. I’m skipping over the gen3 in hopes the gen 4 will get 30 mpg and go 0-60 in 6 seconds with all those electric motors.

I recently drove up to Denver in my m/t 2019 and this was my experience at altitude.....oddly the computer reported better gas milage than I got in Vegas.

Altitude’ll do it. Likely we neglect terrain in a lot of our power/mpg/drivability arguments about these trucks

Not really. It’s basic stuff. The truck weighs 4500 lb and without weight distributing hitches and benefits of a fifth wheel etc. it’s like the tail wagging the dog. Besides, how many really have the trailer braking system needed. You can’t stop 9000 Lbs very often with the brakes on a Taco. Besides, there are lots of people out there that disregard the GVWR and exceed it easily towing much less then max with gear and people.

Well, you’re right about one thing, the present version of the 3.5 is wanting. But the 2.7 is no final answer either. A decent pizza delivery truck motor, but still lesser then the 3.5.

turbo charging solves the problem at both the expense of durability and mileage. I think more electric motors is Toyota’s final answer.

Gee, the 2.5 hybrid Prime in the RAV with 300 hp and great torque would do it,

I made a couple of trips to the sawmill today. My first load although it was handling very well, felt a little heavy so I pulled into the local feed mill and onto the scales to be weighed. Considering how well it towed, I was quite shocked to see the numbers. It’s a good thing I wasn’t pulled over by the MTO.
    0D97A1FF-670B-4A8D-96FE-F00F778A2563.jpg 14D69947-1218-40E3-9388-4C15B08DA0CA.jpg
because it was just me and the dog in the truck (300 lbs) which weighs about 4500 lbs, the tongue load was about 1100 lbs.
add that to the trailer weight and you get
About 7870 lbs total trailer weight.
The truck pulled fine, handled well and stopped just fine too. I normally wouldn’t haul this much but it is hard to guess how much you load on sometimes.
Side note. With that tongue load, I could not break traction taking off.
If it wasn’t for legalities, I’d have no problem hauling this weight regularly.
