I have 2012 Tacoma 4x4 w/ tow package and I need a little advice. Don't know much about the technical stuff I just drive 'em. I need to tow a TT (3700lbs). Just about everything I've read says do not tow in overdrive and you should always turn it off and use 4th. Mine doesn't have an overdrive on/off button it just has D, 3, 2, 1. Does this mean I tow with it in 3rd? So far on relatively flat roads I've towed in D w/o a problem. The dealer said to use 3 on more hilly roads, however when I do that I sounds as tough the engine is really straining. Heading out on a couple major trips out west this summer w/ steep long grades and I need to get it right. Any advice would be appreciated.

"Drive" on the auto trans 6cyl is actually OD. Move the shift lever to the left and it is now in 4th gear. Take a look at indicator panel at the base of your shift lever and you will see that. I tow my TT in 4th always. I may downshift to third on long uphill grades if needed.

I would recommend a weight distribution hitch with built in sway, trailer brakes and also ride rites (air bags) for your truck. Good luck

fla taco thank you for your answer (it was so simple I feel a little embarrassed about asking), but in any case it helped a lot. I talked to service technicians at two Toyota dealerships and they didn't have an answer which doesn't say much about dealer knowledge.

I do have trailer brakes and control and a sway bar but no WD hitch. I've been told WD isn't necessary on my single axle TT, now I'll rethink that. Also, I've never heard of ride rite air bags, checking that out as well.

    Thanks!
