If you run a WD hitch it would extend the distance between the truck and trailer and you wont need to use any kind of suspension aids towing an Rpod. Look at it this way, you spend $220 on a set of Sumo springs or put that money towards a WD hitch. With a WD hitch the Sumos are not needed with a Rpod tongue weight under 400lbs and you get the benefit of having of a better ride and you can open your tailgate.

I have ride rite air bags. Don’t use the WTH. Tried it no real difference. It needs to be set up with more tension. Came with trailer. The first owner had a Tacoma too.

Me and my wife have a custom built camper that is fairly heavy and boxy. It's not quite as long as the 179 but probably weighs close to it. Our 3.5L pulls fine. It is kind of rev-happy, but you just have to get over that.

We average from 12 - 14mpgs. Depending on where we go.

Also, couple people mentioned brake controllers. Don't the TRD's have integrated brake controllers if you use the 7 pin plug? (or whatever it's called)

Tacomas don't have the brake controller, you have to add it. The wiring is there so it's easy to do.

BTW you should be using a brake controller with your set up.

Rpod 179 dry wieght is 2756lbs? You'll be fine..

    Our Hideout starts out at 3800lbs - and our 2017 tows it like a champ;

Interesting, but then how does the anti-sway control work? To my understanding, if you have the tow package, there is an integrated brake controller. If the truck senses trailer sway, it applied the trailer brakes automatically. But I may be wrong...

There is no brake controller. The sway control will not activate the trailer brakes. Without a brake controller the brake terminal in the 7 way connector is not active.

Yes but does the trailer sway control work without a controller? Regardless, to properly brake the trailer and truck in the shortest possible distance and to prevent a trailer jackknife in wet conditions you should be using a brake controller.

Good idea. What's the distance from center pinhole at the hitch at the truck to center of the ball that attaches to the trailer on this hitch you speak of? The longest ball mount I've been able to find is 16" center pinhole to center ball mount and supports 6000lbs which is plenty over what my Rpod fully loaded will be. I know towing with the tailgate down is really frowned upon and I definitely understand the risks. But it would be nice to know if the option was available in the rare occasion I want to haul a few dirt bikes and tow the Rpod at the same time. This would help me decide if the short bed was doable for my situation. I love the plus sides to the shorty over the negatives for a daily driver, offroading, parking, but only if I can make it work for all my needs.

Let me go measure that for you. The issue with the tailgate down is turning and contacting the jack. Did that on my old Tacoma pulling the boat out of the water.

From the center of the pin hole to the middle of the ball is approx 13". Its a 6K Equlizer and when connected to the trailer I can lower my tailgate.

Awesome, I found this one looks pretty long. with the ball attached looks like it'll be longer than 16" maybe 17~18" which would be great. any chance you could also measure the distance from the center pinhole on the hitch at the truck side to the end of the tailgate when its in the down position? I think with a long setup like this it could work out. I guess I could always remove the jack while towing its only 3 bolts to hold it to the trailer.

Distant from the ball to the tailgate is 5"

Drop bar appears to be one foot long.

Awesome, thank you for all your help. I'm thinking with that even longer hitch mount it will work out just perfect.

Your right I owe you a cold one! here's my setup, I'm hoping the long hitch doesn't put too much stress on the frame, this hitch is HEAVY. Very solid unit, I think it's gonna work out great for towing with the tailgate down! I had to cut about 2-3 inches off the bottom of the hitch for more clearance.

The oem Tacoma hitch is over built so I dont think you will have an issue. Also the rpod isn't that heavy and your using a wd so it helps with the tongue weight.

Good to hear. I may have to extend my trailer plug wire. Will find out this weekend. Planning a tow next week
