I was wondering if anybody is willing to help me out and give me suggestions on the towing capability of my Tacoma.. I have a 2014 Tacoma prerunner 2.7l automatic doublecab.. I have added a volant air intake and LCE headers along with a urd maf calibrator.. I'm going to be towing a boat this month and the max payload for the trailer with boat and accessories will be 3000lbs or less.. So I'm confident that the truck can pull it and travel about 100 miles round trip... What I'm really iffy about is that the trucks little engine would have problems at the unloading and loading dock.. Has anyone towed a boat with a 2.7l that's 2wd not 4wd? I'm afraid to get stuck at the loading dock and the little engine can't pull it out lol

Won't be a problem, I pull similar with my 2.7 auto regularly. Leave it in third during the trip instead of drive.

If you do have any issue, it will be lack of traction if the ramp is slick, not power.

Oh ok yea I just needed some reassuring.. Thanks, do you think slightly brand new slightly larger tires would help with traction?

What kind of hitch do you have? Or do all 2014 Prerunners come with one?

Only if you have a traction problem now that is caused by old small tires. ;)

In my experience, ramp slime/seaweed doesn't care what kind of tire is on it. It's gonna be slick. It's much more practical to rake out a path for your tires to sit and run up in a clear spot.

Never a heavy boat, mine is light, but I towed my snowmobile trailer with my old 2.7L gen 1. For a little 4cyl it's actually a torquey little engine. My sled trailer is close to 3000 loaded and it would yank it through the mountains no problem. I don't usually see many ramps around me that are slick with slime or seaweed. They get used so much that they are clean as a whistle. But I'm in NH.

    Everyone,
I am a new member and I am glad to be apart of this online forum. This is my first forum I have ever joined online. I bought my Tacoma new in Hawaii back in 2011. I got the 4 cylinder Double Cab because gas prices were around $5.00 a gallon and I have a family of 5. I am now back on the main land and moving from Georgia to Maryland. I am planning on pulling a Homemade trailer that is approximately 18 feet long and 7.5 ft wide. It used to be a Skyline pull behind camper. My children and I went to refurbish it and it just had way to much termite damage and the roof was leaking from everywhere, so the next best thing was to make it a cargo trailer. It has double axles!

I am pulling my trailer 584 miles. It will be loaded with a Honda Recon 250 (816lbs), Petal Boat (110lbs), Hunting Accessories (300lbs) and all the clothes that a man can own (800lbs). Trailer weight is 1000lbs. I need some help in determining my trailer towing capacity?

I believe the towing capacity is 3500 lbs and I'm pretty sure it can tow it no problem but what I've heard that if your going to tow with an automatic to keep it in 3rd and its suggested a tranny cooler.. Lol but that's just what I've read.. Never actually towed on the highway yet.. Just streets and around the yard for a feel if my taco can pull 3000lbs.. And it can no problem

Its not that you want to keep it in 3rd, its that you want to keep it from "hunting". I.e., if its continually shifting between 3 and 4, then you put it in 3 to stop it from jumping back and forth. If it will hold 4th without hunting, that is the best thing to do.

That drive is pretty flat. You shouldn't have any issues.

towed on a 2002 2.4L I4 RWD from NC to FL. i could feel the trailer sway and chains were about 1inch from ground. it never shifted to 4th on OD mode. as soon as i arrived, the tranny felt like it was done. did it again from FL to OH but with a lighter trailer. still hav the truck and selling it soon.

got rid of my 2010 4.0 V6 DCSB Prerunner due to the fact it couldnt even get pass the access ramp to the beach. had fj baja wheels with new hankook ATs. so embarrassing coz the subarus and jeep just keep passing by me. all i could do was park it on the road then walked to the beach. promised myself that my next tacoma would be a 4X4.

just make sure you bring a tow line just in case.

Was this in FL or NC? I can definitely believe you couldn't get passed the dunes in NC. This is the reason I decided to convert my Prerunner to 4WD. I'm calling it the Postrunner.
