I have an 09 Access cab 4x4 4 banger. I know it is rated to tow 3500 lbs. Just curious, I know the V6 is rated at towing at over 5000 Lbs. As per the suspension, brakes, weight. There really isn't any diff. in those areas between my truck and a V6. I didn't by this truck for daily towing, or anything over 3500 Lbs. Question is, say for example had to hook something up to tow it a mile or two (on the flats), this truck could do it just as as safely as the V6???

I don't understand what happened between the 1 gen and 2nd gen Tacomas as far as pulling?? My 04 2.7l 4 banger is rated to pull 5000 lbs.... at least I sure thought it was??

I've never overloaded my Tacoma, but my work truck is a F250 and I have routinely pulled many thousands of lbs more than it was rated for on a 25' dual axle trailer loaded up with sheetrock. The only issue was the braking... on some down hills there would be no way I could completely stop, and that wasn't good at all.

Interesting, so the Gen 1 Inline 4 was rated for 5000 lbs. I know that on the gen 2 the suspension frame, brakes, etc are all the same as the v6. Only diff is the power and the tranny....

i think the V6 is only rated at that if you have the towing package...not to sure tho...my dad has the towing package ant it's rated at 6500 i believe...

i think it's cause our trucks are so light as well...and the brakes are a bit on the small side...but power wise the truck should be able to tow

3500 is the same whether it's my truck (a single cab 5 lug) and yours....so im pretty sure in reality you can tow more than me. you have a better axle ratio as well so power shouldn't be the problem..

I just looked up the '04 2.7L Taco on Edmunds.com and according to them they were rated to tow 3500 lbs too. That's 2WD or 4x4... all cab configurations... all 3500-lb towing capacity.

As far as what the 2.7L can safely tow... plenty of people on here tow with them... boats, motorcycle trailers, utility trailers, enclosed trailers... you name it. You'll be fine all the way up to the 3500 lb. capacity. I tow my 17' bowrider boat (I'd estimate around 2000-lbs. with fuel and gear) with mine and the handling and braking are GREAT. It feels solid as a rock. Power is decent too. I might have to downshift to 4th gear on the larger hills, but it'll maintain speed just fine. You'd probably be OK to put a hitch ball on your bumper to two something light, but I installed a class III receiver hitch to tow my boat.

Check out the Towing Forum on here for more info.

none, dont want to void the warranty
I hauled 4000lb from Alaska to NY with my v6 Taco with the towing package, it performed great, no problems what so ever. Though I cut my MPG in half and gas isnt cheap. Only once I had to use 4x4 to get up a muddy hill.

wel, if its any consolation, centerforce clutches jsut came out with a new dual friction clutch assembly for all 05+ 2tr-fe engines. might wanna take a look at it if your interested in towing and want some assistance with it.

I tow my 4000lb boat almost every weekend from late march to early november. Never a problem. Brakes are great, tsb susp is great. I even towed my fully ex-caged amigo an a 18' car hauler 25 miles on hilly wisconsin/IL roads. Trailer w/amigo was about 5500lbs. The 4cyl had the power and the trailer brakes/truck brakes worke great togather.
