You and your buddy @bmsgolf ought to apologize for adding no value to the op's thread and original question.

I'm on the low side. A few more pound would probably help a little, but I've found the sweet spot from a personal standpoint.

Thank you. That is what I was trying to find out. Do you run a higher octane or Ethanol Free gas?

I agree, we should continue the discussion in one of the numerous MPG threads.

Not sure how much weight that was but we made it across the country with no problems. The trailer was packed all the way to the roof. E09594D6-56D6-486B-920A-D67488048C13.jpg

I just returned from Europe, Ireland in fact, where I saw countless small cars towing not huge, but certainly decent size RVs along the motorways, our expressways. There had been some serious professional motorcycle races the days before and they were mostly spectators returning maintaining speed without issue.

You will NOT like the towing experience if you buy a Tacoma...Will it tow it? Sure...

But it WILL struggle....constantly gearing down and turning 3,000 RPM and up just to pull it on flat ground....MY V6 does NOT like pulling a 20ft pontoon boat...The engine screams and the gas mileage plummets....It's embarrassing.....

I think my 1997 4-cylinder 5-speed would have towed it more comfortably....

I would definitely buy a bigger truck if you tow a lot!!!!

I've been hauling my Side x Side 4 seater, camping gear, food, extra gas, 4 people, and trailer (roughly 2500lbs with trailer and side x side) with no issues. Definitely no get up and go, but that doesn't bother me. 2" Lift, 1 size bigger LT 10ply tires, averaging 14.5mpg here on the hilly mountain roads of Maine. I do thankfully have the 6spd Manual, so pick the gear that works best for the road I'm on, and leave it for the ride. In my 17 Tacoma, Automatic, I pulled a friend's covered trailer, 2 Harleys in it, a BBQ Grill, 26ft long. Believe it was sitting around 5900lbs total, and yea, truck didn't like it at all. Braking extremely sloppy, didn't want to accelerate, and kind of scared the hell out of me for the 6 miles I towed it. Didn't help we didn't adjust for tongue weight, so who knows how much was actually on it, but that's the only experience I have of hauling anything close to the trucks weight limit, and it was botched due to us in a hurry.

The Tacoma will tow that just fine. The biggest consideration for me is how far. 1 to 2 hrs to a local campground is totally fine. 4 to 6 hrs across 3 states is a big job and a 20 hrs tour across the country ... you may want to consider a bigger truck.

This trailer was 22ft and right at 3400lbs empty and we had it packed full of furniture. Not sure what the final weight was, but it was heavy. The truck did very well getting up to speed and stopping. It was the wind that made it more difficult. You felt every crosswind and while it never felt unsafe, it was more trouble than I would want to deal with on a regular basis. Every now and then is no problem, so it depends on how often you want to use the travel trailer.

Also, I’m in south GA, so pretty flat. I wouldn’t want to tow that in the mountains. The truck could do it, but it probably won’t be much fun.

Towing with a TRD Pro Tacoma is pretty miserable to be honest. I have pulled my S2000 on a trailer a couple different times, with a combined weight of somewhere around 4500-5000 lbs, and it is far from enjoyable. If you decide to do it, you will absolutely need to install air bags or add a leaf to your rear suspension. The stock Fox suspension is very soft, and the Tacoma will squat very badly with any weight back there. The other thing you'll need is to carefully plan out your route to include a LOT of gas stations. Going uphill with a trailer behind you will typically stick you in 3rd gear at 5500 rpms if you're trying to maintain a normal highway speed of 60-65 mph, which will net you a solid 8-9mpg. Your engine will just be screaming for miles on end since all the power this thing has is above 3500rpms. The gearing is very poor stock, coupled with a very torque-less 3.5L V6, and it will make you wish you got a different truck. I would definitely go and try it out before buying, but just be warned that this is very well how it will be if you pull something like that with your Tacoma.

I tow 5000lbs with my 2017 TRD Pro all the time and find it all comes down to a well balanced load and a decent weight distribution hitch. With that I do wish I had a bit more power but still tows fine and am getting decent gas consumption.
