2800 lbs is no problem. I tow a boat that is 3000. Mine is bass boat style so it is fairly low profile. Pontoons and taller boats add wind resistance. On fairly flat roads I tow in 5th if I can keep speed at 60+.

Should not be a problem. Well under the rated tow weight.

Should be ok but make sure to account for the fishing equipment in your bed plus the tongue weight of the trailer (15% of 2,800lbs) when calculating weight ont he rear axle.

Let me channel my inner tgear: don't do it unless you enjoy endangering the lives of innocents on the road.

Really, your truck will have no problem with that. Tow in 4, not D, and trailer brakes wouldn't hurt. Tongue weight will be lower than what BaconPower is calculating as boats are typically below 10% since most of the weight is behind the trailer axle. I tow about 5,000lbs in the Sierras fairly often and the truck does fine.

I would tow a 6000 lbs boat locally as long as I had brakes. Boats are aerodynamic, they don't cause a problem. The big 8' wide travel trailers, that's a different story, I won't go past 3000 lbs on one of them.

I tow a ~4000 lb camper (big front surface area). Took it out to the desert last Nov, climbing big hills with ambient temps in the high 80s, and saw the tranny temp hit 230 a couple times.

I've since upgraded the trans cooler and can consistently keep temps below 200 with an occasional peak of 210.

Towing your boat should be fine - both lighter and a smaller frontal area than a camper.

I tow a 27 ft RV. It is 4700 lbs dry weight. So likely around 5500 to 6000 with all our stuff in it. A weight distribution hitch makes things much more stable. The truck has the power. The trailer has brakes. Set the shifter to 4th and set the cruise to 60 and enjoy the ride. The truck will pull the trailer across the country without a hiccup. Ok maybe the mountains might make things more interesting. Just a great truck all around.

Shouldn't be an issue. I tow a boat every weekend that's about half that weight and don't feel it at all.

I've got a 2012 PreRunner and recently got a 20' camper. I've got a Prodigy P2 brake controller and a tow package in the truck. The trailer is about 3,800lbs fully loaded. I've taken two long trips (interstate 35 in TX ad OK) and other than slow pickup it tows fine between 60 and 65mph. I had a bad issue with sway on my last trip which got pretty scary. I'm having a weight distribution/sway control hitch installed. I'm also adding a CAI, throttle body spacer and performance exhaust installed to help with power.

Who was the snake oil salesman that sold you on the mods? I would like to know in case I meet him. You should always use a sway control set up on a TT regardless of size. The high profile catches wind. It may tow fine in light winds but not if you get a decent x wind.

Check your weight balance and rake of your trailer (don't want it to be super-light tongue or nose-up when towing), verify the trailer tires are properly aired up as well. They're no substitute for a WDH but these types of things can contribute to an unstable towing experience.

not sure if anyone is following this but after the WDH I no longer have sway issues.
I'm also getting about 20% better gas mileage and much faster acceleration with the CAI and exhaust modifications. I"ll see if I can send a note directly to the "snake oil" comment guy. I'm thrilled with the performance after the intake/exhaust mods

Just curious here but I have heard to never tow with cruise control... is that not true?

CC is fine - never tow in overdrive is the rule.

And install a supercharger for a better towing experience.

Those mods will do nothing but add noise. That's 1/6 the cost of a supercharger right there.

For what you pay in a supercharger you could sell the truck and put the supercharger money into a f150
