Towing a 6x12 trailer from NC to northern VA. Does this need to be on the entire drive? I will be starting out where there are no hills but once I get to rocky mount I would think I should turn it on. Someone told me only needs to be on once it gets hilly? Also tacomas are fine towing a 6x12 trailer?

That's the switch for the bed lights, it has nothing to do with towing. Unless you want to illuminate what you're hauling to make sure it's still behind you? I'd recommend reading through your owner's manual for basic towing info.

    lol

That is you cargo lamp switch, lights up your truck bed from the back of the cab (has nothing to do with towing).

Maybe might want to avoid 6th gear (and occasionally 5th too if a slight grade) while towing, but others may have better advice if you have an automatic trans (mine's a manual).

ECT button to the right of the steering wheel, and S-4 to keep revs higher than will be in gear 5 or 6 to have more torque.

Rocky Mount? You're still 150 miles from the mountains. When you get to the mountains, just leave it in S4 and press this button:

No, that will not help. There are many types of 6x12 trailers, so what type of trailer (basic landscape)? Also, what will be on the trailer (est weight)? Does trailer have brakes, do you have a brake controller, etc.. There is a great thread on towing here, give it a read.

To the question about pulling a 6x12 trailer.
This could mean an empty single axle aluminum flatbed which weighs 400lbs.
Or an enclosed dual axle with electric brakes, loaded with books or gym equipment.

Not enough information to answer the question. Though the latter will definitely require a brake controller.

What exactly are you trying to tow?

Somebody was probably pulling your leg on the bed light switch. Figure out a good way to zing them back.

lol i feel dumb, was so tired when posting this, i deserve being called out haha. But Yes the ECT pwr, should that be on the entire drive? My oil was so dirty last time I made a trip towing with that thing on the entire time. Also, enclosed trailer (6x12 U-Haul trailer) I will have a leather couch, thick mattress, leather recliner, dining room table and heavy tv stand and a few chairs.
