Btw, this really only happened when I parked on an incline. But yeah I went back to the oem gas cap.

Hello again folks! So this afternoon I disconnected the battery again for 15 minutes and started the engine. NO TRAC OFF LIGHT and NO ENGINE WARNING LIGHT. Thanks for the advice as you all saved me a lot of money in buying a scanner. My greatest gratitude to you all. Now I will try to figure out why my lockable gas cap will not work but for now it will remain off. A great weekend at you all but I have to work so no rest for the weary!

As for the locking gas cap. Its really not gaining you anything. There is next to no chance that you can get your gas siphoned.

You are only gonna piss off a potential thief and end up with a scratched paint job. Any thief that tries to siphon gas is a novice and doesn't know that its impossible.

Most gas thieves will just take a cordless drill and drill the tank and let the gas flow into an oil change pan. They don't have to stand around waiting for the the pan to fill up. Come back in 20 minutes, grab pan and go.

In short, toss the locking gas cap in the nearest trash and be thankful that this thread will educate future Tacoma owners.

    Thanks for starting the thread.

My only problem with the gas thing is that there are some who out of jealousy or other motivation, will try to damage your vehicle internally. Seen it happen many times before even to me when my glass was thrashed and a nail in my sidewall possibly out of youthful play by young kids. People tend to think of Canada as being a country of totally decent people but the truth is that there are both good and bad in all countries. I think your thoughts on tossing the cap may be my sole solution and not a wastage of my time so thanks again koditten and best of the week to you.

What a frustration....Convinced Taco's are highly overrated.... bought new in 2014...first the lack of intermittent wipers. the dealer said "No can do" as far as a conversion... joined this forum learned real quick that "can do" I swapped the switch to an intermittent, 15 minutes in my driveway...Now the non locking fuel door....got a locking gas cap, and now have "check engine/trac off". Will put the original cap back on, disconnect the battery & hopefully the fault lights will correct themselves....My opinion, the finger tab on the fuel door would attract someone to tamper with the gas tank...and by pass the vehicles that have cable systems...not that I like to deal with fussing with a key at fill ups....Its just disappointing that we the consumers have to correct Toyota's short comings...Can't wait for the next thing....."Lets go Places"

As 03maurderman indicated, I too tend to believe that tacomas are way overated. Sorry for your woes sir but seems vehicles these days are controlled by milliamperes of current and sensors that are very sensitive. Sign of the times and money rules the world it appears. Doing a lift on my Tacoma and am amazed at the inferiority of the underside components as to those of vehicles years gone by. Keep us posted Maurderman as it is good information.

so no code was read. I dont want to be a bummer but my truck did this and it is my catalytic converts failing. Sometimes if i clear the codes it can take weeks before it pops back up and always the same code. these damn trucks have 4 catalytic converts so i would suggest reading the code if it happens again to just be sure you know whats going on then just clearing the check engine light without specifically know what the code was/is just my $0.02. either way good luck and hope it was just the gas cap.

Ah..Gotta start from the beginning...I'm 60+ years on this planet...mechanic in the 70ies, where you could fix things.... anticipating my retirement I bought a new 2014 Tacoma 4x4 access cab 4 cyl A/T....Kept it in my garage for 3 years... never drove it.... It now has 1460 miles as I just got back from a 683 mile trip...In the 3 years I have it, I put 777 miles before my trip.... When I bought it I was not impressed of how under powered it was, actually worse than I expected, as my daily driver is a 2015 Ford Escape that will spank the pants off the Tacoma.... both 4 cyl. The Escape has direct injection the Taco might as well have a carburetor..but the ole fart that I am, figured I would be in no hurry and can live with the dreadful performance of the Tacoma. I have a lift in my garage so I raised the Tacoma removed the wheels, plastic liners covered the exhaust system & sprayed the complete undercarriage with clear RP-342 cosmoline. Frame, oil pans, transfer case, rear, springs..everything where water would hit it....I also made full rubber splash shields for the front wheelwells... to replace the excuse of non protection factory shields......When you look inside the wheelwell on the passenger side you clearly see the alternator, and on the drivers side the a/c compressor....Thinking every water puddle or rain/snow storm both components get waterlogged. Toyota doesn't care as these items will basically be problem free for the duration of the warrantee... and after that guess who pays....Generally the overall consumer breaks down and gets towed to the dealer...exactly what they want....So getting back to my check engine/trac light... "trucko" is absolutely correct, I should and will scan the codes.....But I'll still maintain that the Tacoma is an OK truck for a specific intended purpose. If it can't go fast, or carry more than a pallet of potato chips, and can out lasts me, then I'm good....

Put it up for sale on here my man. You will sell it quick. I'm not in the market, my 2010 TRD OR suits me just fine. Look forward to seeing your for sale post. I will be happy to let my buddies who are in the market for a Tacoma know about it. Where are you located?

Sounds good pal. Let us know what you end up selling it for. Always good to know what the re-sale is on Tacomas. Crazy how much they sell for, you will do fine. What are you going to buy once you sell it?
