    Hey everyone,

New member here getting ready to take delivery of a 2022 Tacoma in the next week or so. I'm a previous Ford customer and new to the Toyota brand.

Generally speaking I usually don't purchase extended warranties at the time of sale. In the Ford community there are a few online dealers that will sell the Factory extended warranties significantly cheaper than the finance guy will offer them to you at the time of sale.

Is there anything like that in the Toyota world?

    Thanks for your help.

No money, all went to truck...
Try search, there's a pretty recent, long thread on this topic.

I went with Toyota's extended warranty. First time I've ever bought it. It might be a waste of money but good piece of mind for the next 10 years.

Wolverine Toyota, has the best price. I believe you have until the factory warranty runs out.

All i can tell you, i pissed off the toyota finance officer when i refused their extended warranty. I've owned toyota trucks since 1978, only serious problem was a engine failure within 36k miles. I guess if your worried about their sensors, or other electronic parts failing long after the warranty is up that your unable to fix, it might be a good idea.

Why are car finance officers so grouchy as a whole?

I didn't get any extended warranty because:
    • if there's any defect from factory, it would show up way earlier that should be caught with standard warranty
    • extended warranty only covers up to 100k or 150k miles, most expensive repairs happen after that so the warranty is useless in this case
basically I decide to roll the dice and hope nothing major happens between 60k-150k miles.
Also you should know that Toyota dealership techs are being paid flat rate for warranty repairs. Sometimes that means the techs are not being appropriately compensated. I'd rather not buy extended warranty and save the money and later if I do need repair I can take it to a private mechanic who does a good job and pay them fairly.

This pretty much sums up why I dont bother with extended warranties. These warranties are probably the single most profitable item sold at a dealership, thats the only reason they get pushed on people..
I just got my 7th Tacoma and passed on the F&I guys pitch when signing the paperwork.
A lot of people dont like taking the gamble because they feel “covered” in case , but so far Im way ahead by never getting one.

You can purchase a Toyota extended warranty from any Toyota dealer. Wolverine Toyota in Dundee, Michigan sells them at a discount. Ask for Ian.

I have been buying Toyota trucks for the last 35 years and never had extended warranties. No need to, Toyota has a good reputation for having quality built products.

I got the Toyota extended plan for my 2014 Tacoma and the radio w/bluetooth died at year 4. The cost to replace that factory radio was absolutely insane. Paid for my cost three fold +

At the same time, if the radio hadn't died, I would have wasted the $$$$ I spent on the warranty.

I didn't buy it from the dealership I got my truck from and got a much better deal online.

Don't waste your time with non-toyota warranty.

This is encouraging to hear. I've been doing a bit a reading and I'm not coming across a lot of catastrophic failures.

I hope my experience is the same.

After hitting about 105,000 miles with no issues other than the leaking third brake light, I think I’m doing pretty good without the extended warranty.

Buy quality products after sound research. And skip ALL extended warranties. You’ll probably come out ahead in the end.

Research on tw you will find that us taco owners have had bad luck with extended warranties. Keep up on maintenance and you shouldnt have to worry about anything . This is coming from someone with 154k mi 2017 original owner no issues . No worries

Anything with tits or a motor will eventually going to give you problems.

I have a 2018 A/C and have already used the extended warranty I bought for three dealer involved repairs concerning the replacement of three coils, plenum and ACIS actuator door, and a sparkplug during last visit. These three visits cost more than what I paid for with the extended warranty. I do expect future visits as well, this truck has been lemonistic recently.

I agree that most issues are likely to show up within the factory warranty period. Generally speaking I avoid extended warranties myself. However, my primary concern isn't the running gear but rather the electronics. Looking at the prices for a factory extended warranty on one of the above links through a online dealer it appears to be cheap insurance. Myself, I will time out of warranty long before I mileage out. For less than the cost of a burger a week I can have 10 years worth of coverage and not have to worry if something happens.

Regarding the rest of your comment. I choose not to concern myself with how others are compensated for their chosen line of work. If they are good, they will become efficient and survive or they will move on to greener pastures where they are compensated for their value.

My experience with private mechanics and tech products/electronics is that they either can't or don't want to work on that side of the equation and refer you back to the dealership to resolve the issue. I'm not worried about the engine or the running gear, I can do that stuff myself.
