Go out on the interwebs and find a ford forum and ask them what type of problems the rangers have? First thing I would ask about is the transmissions. And then give the the old "Found On Road Dead" Joke.

3 Rangers for me. 1st in 1998 was a 1993 4x4 regular cab step side Splash.... It was a 4.0 5 speed, with 50,000 miles and it well taken care of. Used a quart of oil every 1500 miles. I put a clutch/slave cylinder in it around 60k and manual hubs. Dumped it for a K5 Blazer (when gas was .89 a gallon).

Next one was a well worn 94 reg cab long bed 4x4 with the 3.0. Around 120,000 miles when I got it. I went thru that truck, replacing everything... Auto hubs, plugs, wires, dist., misc.sensors, exhaust and other stuff... It was cheap truck thankfully. My grandpa bought it from me since he needed a truck.. He never had a problem with it.

The third and final was a 99 ext cab 4x4 with a 3.0 also with 80k. I only had it for 6 months; it was a gutless turd. Traded it on a new (leased) Chevy Colorado ext cab 4x4.

Both 3.0's pinged like a SOB unless I ran 89 octane.

The best mileage I got was 17 out of the 99. The 4.0 was terrible....

Rangers haven't changed much since the body style update in 1993.

Personally the Tacoma has been the highest quality and reliable truck I've owned so far. And I plan on keeping it for a while..

Workman's uncle has an 88' Ranger 4x4 with 265K on it. Only things that have ever gone wrong are normal such as alternator, battery, brakes and that is seriously about it. Original Auto tranny and engine! It is the only vehicle that he has ever known his uncle to own, and it has been from Idaho to South America MANY times, even recently! Workman thinks if you cleaned off all the caked on oil covering the engine, it would squirt oil profusely.

Workman's uncle is the ski bum hippie type, kinda like Workman....minus the hippie part. Workman has hair past his shoulders though:cool:

Agreed, my 91 ranger was a POS. That's all I could afford at 16.

Oh c'mon now! I can wrench that oil filter off a 99 F-150 w/o spilling my beer! Now, it's not as convenient as the Taco's, but it does hang down so no plumbing req'd. :D

I loved my 96 Ranger, with the exception of the 4 transmission rebuilds, it performed flawlessly for 135,000 miles before the Tacoma.

One rebuild every 35k. Sounds like a piece of crap to me. If tacomas crapped out that much I wouldn't buy one.

They were known to eat transmissions unless you religiously flushed them every 20,000 miles ( I was a bit lax). Aside from that, great truck.

Never had a TSB for bad springs or rust AND I could see the dash clock.

I owned 2 rangers (90&00). Never had any problems. However, I've also had 4 tacos with no problems. They really are not comparable trucks. The tacos are expensive up front, but when you go to trade them in you realize how cheap they are to own.

There are many things about the Ranger that I really liked, some more than the Tacoma, but there is no doubt that the Toyota has held its value better.

    some facts:

i've owned 2 rangers. i'll never pay money for another one again...they depreciate very quickly. however they're decant trucks, as mentioned above, they haven't had a complete redesign sense '98. t i replaced the following things on my '98 ranger between 60,000 and 210,000 miles.

-6 alternators. yes i meant to type 6.
    -t case (stretched chain)
    -clutch
-2 clutch master and slave cyl.
    -rear axle (grenaded it)
    -a few front hub bearings.

opinion time: NO ranger is worth as much as an '09 4x4 taco. the 4.0 is reilable, drinks fuel, and has half the "butt dino" horsepower.

there's a reason 2012 is the last year.
