Toyo AT3 SL good for off roading? E load is too much?

    Hey,

Maybe this has been asked but I want some toyo at3 but in 265/75r16 and they only have e or SL rated.

From everything I’ve read, e will be too stiff. I drive a 4 banger. Will SL handle or do I go with a different tire?

In my opinion, suspension and tire pressure make more of a difference than load rating. If you offroad at all, I'd go with the E load and play around with tire pressure/chalk test them.

I have the SL rated 265/70/r17. We did our Utah/Arizona trip on them including Parashant and a few other places where 'bring two spares' is recommended. Had no issues and required no spares. Since then they have done just fine on all the random forest service roads and weird offshoots. I don't go hard, heck I'm not sure I even know what going hard means, so SL works great for me. I'm glad I went SL and I'd do it again. Maybe you go harder or have worse luck than me, just have your spare in working condition and if it becomes a pattern go heavier then.

Only downside is I keep getting asked by my offroading friends if I'm getting new tires soon (10k on them right now) because the SL sidewalls and AT tread pattern are not very deep or aggressive looking.

Since OP has the 2.7L 4 cylinder I believe the extra weight of the E will negatively impact his truck’s overall drivability.

There are really only 2 situations that we recommend going up to a higher load range, in most cases from the SL to the E load.

1: If you are often towing near or at the max vehicle load capacity a 10ply tire will run cooler and will likely last longer as well handle the towing better.
2: If you're offroading in areas where there are sharp obstacles, a heavier tire construction can help prevent punctures due to the changes made to the carcass that increases load capacity.

OP don't get Es unless you are offloading A LOT. I got some Cooper ST Maxx Es, and for daily driving, and towing, they will slow your acceleration, increase braking input, and require relentless rotation and balances. I have a 2015 DCLB V6, with a Leer RCC (heavy), and carry a full size spare. And I tow a 1800 lb trailer and a full bed of camp gear in mountains.

I sold those Coopers and got some Falken Wildpeaks, roughly load. C, and have no regrets at all. Drivability improved, and the did fine on the rocky approach section to the start of the Rubicon Trail no issues, great traction off and on road, and rain.

Sounds like crappy tires/alignment if they need constant rotation and balancing. I went through a whole set of tires (55k miles) without ever rebalancing or even rotating, with tearing chunks of tread off from wheeling.

That's what I was thinking, any extra rotating mass and I'm sure it won't be great.

The people on here whining about E rated tires riding rough never owned a truck and came from driving a bmw.

    Get the E's.

I'm in SLC and ride up to 10k regularly, I'm currently running the Humko Adventure 51's and they're P rated and do everything so I'm leaning SL.

I’m not a hard wheeler. That said, I would only choose an E if it was the only option in a specific size I want. If SL is available, I’m getting SL. Especially on a 4 banger.

Lol yeah, it's not the rough ride I'm worried about, it's the...getting up the hill. Add on a SO and 2 dogs and all of our gear, those extra 6lbs per corner adds up.

I have these in 265/75r16 SL, air down and be mindful of what line you choose and what you go over or around and you should be fine.

I've gone through tons of sharp rocks and shale, forestry trails with fallen cut trees (ground spears), rivers, mud, snow/ice etc without problems. I know guys with E rated tires that have blown their tires or cut side walls but mostly because they are overloaded and not aired down.

I had good luck with my SL rated Wildpeaks. Even over some rocky terrain (albeit not super sharp rocks). I wouldn't hesitate to run them again. But, it's also smart to make sure you have a capable, full size spare and the tools / repair materials needed for trail repairs. If you are constantly going hard and often in areas far from any service or help then I could see the E rating as an extra layer of confidence.

Thanks for all the advice! I ended up going with the Toyo AT3 SL and took them out to a reservoir this weekend, they're awesome! Quiet on the road but gravel road grip is great.
