    Hi all,

After lots of research I am pretty certain to be going with the Toyo Open Country AT3 as my next tire.
Going to get the LT265/70/R17 in load range E (needed for my camper).

Unfortunately, no shop in my area has these tires in stock for me to look at.

I am wondering how aggressive the sidebiters are on this specific tire size & load rating??

The sidebiters on the floatation range of these tires looks nice (fairly aggressive but nothing too crazy) while the sidebiters on the LT range of these tires looks almost non-existent (not aggressive, very flat).

However, I think I read here on the forums that the sidebiters on the LT265/70/R17 (and sizes up from there) are the more aggressive sidebiters, which I certainly hope is true.

I even called and spoke to Toyo but the representative couldn't confirm either way (strange).

Does anyone have the AT3 in LT265/70/R17 load range E that could confirm how aggressive the sidebiters are??
If you happen to have pictures that you could post I would be very appreciative.

    Thanks!!

I have the SL version of this tire and can at least confirm they have no real side biters at all. To your actual question, I've always read like you say that the E loads have the aggressive side biters.

In reading the big Toyo AT3 thread, some posts indicated that the USA made tires had much thicker sidewalls then the Japan made tires.
Those posts were back in 2020 though.
There was even a post with Toyo confirming this (post # 492).
USA made, thicker sidewalls, a little heavier vs Japan made, thinner sidewalls, a little lighter.
Anyone know if that still holds true??

The LT’s have the more noticeable side biters. If you want a more aggressive side biters, look at Mickey Thompson AT’s. The Toyo AT3’s are light for what they are. But they are less exciting than some other options. IMG_1899.jpg IMG_1838.jpg IMG_1886.jpg

    Thanks for the reply!!

Your tires look good. What size and load rating are they?? Do you happen to know where they were made (usa or japan) or what is the plant code is on the tires??

The Mickeys are great and I researched them but they are really heavy.

The light weight of the Toyo's is a major reason why I chose them. I wanted a lighter AT tire with less rotational weight to help counter the weight of the camper. But also trying to ensure I can get the at3 with the most aggressive sidewall as well.

Thanks, they are 285/75/17" (34") E load rating, made in the U.S. I got them from Discount Tire a little over a year ago and they are wearing evenly and hardley look as if they lost much tread at all. If weight high importance, you will be hard pressed to select a lighter option in its class.
