Look up "chalk test for tire pressure" on Google or here in TW. Someone provided it for me and I found it helpful.

At this point I would avoid peaks. They used to be a good deal a few years back but now they are the same price as more premium tires.

In less than 2 years mine are already dry rotted and were a bitch to balance. They still shake to this day.

I can't add a whole lot to this discussion, but I had Falkens (265/70R17 SL 115T) and I absolutely hated them. They immediately felt really heavy for an SL, they scrubbed the concrete very aggressively on turns and made the steering feel really loaded down, they definitely hit my mpg by at least 3 on the highway and the tire shop could not get them to balance right. That was coming from 265/75R16 Hankook ATMs that I was not real fond of either. I had Discount swap the Falkens to General Grabber ATX 265/70R17 SL and instantly all my complaints from the Falkens were alleviated. I will say the Falkens did have very good wet and dry traction, but then again so did the ATX.

As said by others, the Falkens were originally a budget tire and were priced accordingly. apparently the traction for the price won people over because they all decided to run them, and natural supply and demand ran that price up to now be about the same as the most expensive tires, or at least close. Certainly more expensive than other better tires. So I would say the Falkens are never worth it, based on my experience and the now current price.

On my Tacoma I am looking to try the Toyo ATIIIs. Currently have BFG KO2 265/70R17 Load E, and am not a fan. Am hoping whatever I get by downsizing back to 265/65R17 will give me some power, mpg, and overall lighter weight back. I'm about to read through this thread and see what the opinions on Toyos are.

Edit: read thread, looks like plenty agree with me and like the Toyos. I think I am finally sold on the Toyos now.

Had the Falkens for 40k - Excellent tire all around except for they liked to slip initially on ice and snow. Have the Toyo now and it has much better initial bite probably due to the extra siping. Both are really decent on the road as well.

I've been running the 265/65R17 XL Toyo ATIII's for over a year and they've been absolutely rock solid on my truck. They are quiet (almost to the point that my original Toyo A 30 HT's were). They are excellent on pavement both dry and wet and track true. I do a lot of mudding and they are quite impressive so far.

Disagree . We had a significant snow 2 years in the row and WPs performed as expected.

Strange, my 255/80/17 wildpeaks required very little weight to balance. They are smooth as glass at any speed.

Yep, 35 is about right. Unless you run heavy.

Do you perform the chalk test when the tires are cold or hot?

I guess you just got some from a good batch. I’ve seen other threads around here about balancing issues with WPs, and then there are many who say theirs had no problem like yours (which is why I figured I’d give them a shot). I’m sure this can happen with any brand of tires, but when it happens to me, I’ll avoid that brand like the plague in the future. In 30 years of driving, these tires have caused me more grief than any other tires I’ve had.

I have always had a 4wd of some sort, ran BFG AT and not anymore. Made the switch to Toyos AT2s in 2018 on my new Tacoma. I have 20K miles on my Tacoma and the Toyos are awesome, light, easy to balance with little weight, quiet, great on the beach,in the rain. Never been in deep mud or snow. They are simply the best I have had so far, nothing bad to say about the WP but read alot about balancing issues and heavy. Now onto the Toyos AT3s are imo simply the best. I don't have a set yet but my Son's truck is identical to mine, same lift, wheels, suspension, every mod I have we did to his. So he drives more than I do and picked up a nail on the sidewall, AT2s were not in stock and the AT3s were just coming out. He got a set for $640 new, installed and out the door in a 265/70/17. The look more agressive and by far are way better than the AT2s which are awesome to begin with. The WPs do look great also but so does a BFG, but I'm not riding on looks!

Just replaced a set of 255 85 16 Toyo MT with these. So far so good. I only got 25k on the MTs.

Do you guys think it’s worth paying another 240-280 something for a spare? I’ve heard that it wouldn’t even fit under the truck where the spare tire mounts, so I wonder where I would even put it. I mean would my stock 265/65/17 work in an emergency, if I needed a spare?

Or I was thinking maybe just buy a small compressor and a plug kit?
