Only because I don't like dealer's, in particular the majority of service departments I've dealt with.

TGMO in USA is blended by Mobil to Toyota's preferences. There are profound differences between TGMO and the various Mobil 1 formulas. Viscosity index improver dosages are a key difference.

There are wide differences in viscosity between various 0W20 oils. Sustina is the thinest at HTHS 2.6 . Red Line is the thickest at HTHS 2.9 .

Motor oil design should be a consideration in selecting a motor oil. Arm yourselves with the best information.

Good to know on Redline, I thought it was on the lighter end. I'll end up running their 0W20. Thanks for the info.

Doesn't matter what you use as long as viscosity is correct.

I got a case delivered for $40 on Ebay not long ago....

The transfer case oil 75W that is also branded Toyota is made for Toyota by Chevron.

Mobil1 and the Toyota synthetic are different... that website bobtheoilguy or whatever it is did a comparo tested both and the Taco oil was slightly better. I forgot the specifics but they gave it a better rating than M1.

Sigh. There is no "break in oil" in our Tacomas. It is just Toyota's 0W-20 synthetic. Too many oil analysis's out there prove that the oil coming in a new Tacoma is the same as what Toyota dealers use for their oil change.

Guys, this is not a mystery. Use a name brand 0W-20 viscosity and you will be fine.

I have never seen so many amateur wanna-be Tribologist's on one forum in my life.

Speaking only for myself, I have no background in the sciences whatsoever.

I am merely a consumer who has logged well in excess of 1 million miles on Toyota trucks, specifically 22RE and 2TR FE.

I am sure you can get away with TGMO 0W20, Mobil 1 AFE 0W20, Pennzoil Platinum 0W20, or whatever similar oil you damn well please, at a 10k mile OCI, for a few hundred thousand miles or so...

I ordered 2 cases direct form the dealer and cost 33 bucks a case. My placebo effect feels like the truck likes the yoter oil better than the mobil even though I know it doesn't matter. 4 Banger btw:transformer:

I can’t find an online owners manual myself but that is in line with other gr engines.

If you go to this Castrol link they will recommend an A3/B4 Castrol edge first. Which is a thicker 5w30.

Since this is the last oil thread I could find, Do any of you guys remember a post showing a test report of all the oil comparisons? It was a report from the early 2000's I think. I also remember they referenced one member as the go to guy for oil. I just want to read and educate my self. If anything helps, I think the report conclude was that Royal Purple was ahead of the game in many of the tests.

I’m no Tribologist, but I wouldn’t recommend Royal Purple for anything, it’s expensive and there’s plenty of alternatives that are better for even less money.

    But, it’s purple

To their credit they make high end gear oil that meets some specs that others don’t. But, I think it’s more marketing than anything.

I’m not sure if they’re synthetics are Group 3, 4 or 5, but I would guess Group 3 along with most others, which doesn’t really make them special.

I just bought 20 qts from Culver Toyota for $5.72 a quart. They were a little surprised when I asked them what price they could give for that many but then gave a pretty good price. The boxes all say Exxon-Mobil on them. The price is about the same as I was paying for Mobil 1 in 5qt containers. More containers to recycle now.

You should buy the 5 Quarts Jugs of Mobil 1 and send for the $12 Rebate, works out to a little more than $2 a Quart.
