That is interesting. Must be how the truck is designed to absorb impacts. Did you change to the beefier bumper after that happened?

Well, my buddy who owns a Ford says his truck is tough but says he hasn't tested it out like I have. :)

I'm just happy I wasn't driving my MINI Cooper at the time. That would have been completely destroyed.

yeah my insurence agreed to pay $500 for the bumper cover, paint, and misc parts for the bumper, i figured if i was gonna get one (i was dreaming about them) i should do it now while they're helping pay for over half the cost of my relentless fab bumper

if you're thinking winch bumper now's the time to do it, it'll also give you a good piece of mind with that kind of protection on the front

You showed those trees who's boss!!! suprisingly for the beating your truck took there isn't a lot of damage. working at a dealership i see some pretty eff-ed up stuff from simply sliding off the shoulder

Glad you're okay and thanks for the story.

You need winter tires. One can see from the "aftermath" photos that this wasn't an ice storm where zero traction was available (note that people were standing upright, rather than falling on their a$$es.). This was compressed snow that had formed into spotty ice. Winter tires probably would have given you the traction you needed to stop before the tree line.

Many people in the Twin Cities don't buy winter tires because the roads there are treated with deicer liberally. Up north, totally different story.

Again, glad you're ok, and the truck is too.

Yikes! Glad you both are okay. Saw a similar accident in AK once where a minivan had gone off the road and into the trees. They plowed head on into birch and spruce trees for about 30' before coming to a stop...minivan was totaled.

And yet, somehow, whatever tore the wheel didn't puncture the tire. Ponder that one...

Great story and video to boot. Interesting. I've got the 4x too (manual trans) and I look at the truck like it's invincible. I've got BFG ATs, but I guess perhaps chains are really required. I'm not sure 4x would help. I'm putting tube bumpers and sliders on mine and looking at your situation, I wonder how much better that would come through.

    Thanks for sharing.

I don't see how 4wd would have helped you at all. No traction is no traction.

You were lucky that you snapped off many small trees instead of fewer larger ones. Each small tree absorbed part of the truck's kinetic energy by bending. The gradual stop from that is why the airbags didn't go off.

watching that video I really remember what it was like to live in northern Minnesota, where these exercises were just a part of everyday life.

I've been in California so long that I forget all those things...

Yeah I think my truck had less kms on it when it was sideswiped. Now I park it like I'm daring people to hit it.

Surprisingly having 200lbs of cold rolled steel seems to deter people pretty good.

PS - You know that's not what Toyota means when they say 'break in period' right? ;)
