I almost have 5K miles on my tacoma and asked the dealership if they would go ahead and change the oil early at 5k for the first oil change and they tell me i need to wait for 10k miles. I am then told i need to do the 5k miles service which sounds like just a tire rotation, so i told them i would wait for the 10k miles. The dealership tells me i need to do the 5k and all other services to maintain the waranty, don't really believe this is this true?

The Toyota dealerships can suck a big bag of hairy dicks.

Do everything yourself on schedule and keep the receipts. Really, they do two oil changes and five tire rotations, that’s it.

Take it in only for recalls.

TGMO (Toyota Genuine Motor Oil) is Mobil 1 synthetic and probably Walmart (which I don’t go into). It’s about $30 for 5Qts.

This is my new favorite 0W20 which has shown superior used oil analysis against Mobil and TGMO at Bob Is The Oil Guy. It’ll go 10k and beyond. It’s about $50 for 5Qts.

You can record everything on toyotaowners.com or the app. You put the date and mileage along with what services were done. That way if something does come up and they give you a hard time you can show them. However, I dont think I would use that dealer for any warranty work, sounds like a bunch of b.s. going on there.

I don't get what's the big deal about following the service schedule that was put together by Toyota themselves?

I mean, its a service free of charge so I don't really get the animosity towards it. You asked them to perform a task outside of what they are allowed by Toyota to do and they declined. Can't really fault them for that, its ultimately not their call. If anything is going to void the warranty i'd say its any work not performed by the dealership. I'd say wait it out until 10k, then if they find an issue due to dirty oil you can remind them you asked to have it done at 5k and they said no. So then it's really on them.

    You can, on your own.

I’ve always changed my fluids engine, diffs, trans, everything.

Once at the Dealership I asked them how much a Rear Diff fluid change costs, they said $190, it’s a two hour job. Nope, It’s a 5 minute job and 10 minutes if you’re drunk.

I’m in agreement, do it yourself.

Sure it’s top of the line, not cheap, I’d use it but I get Redline and some others a bit cheaper.

yea, just get the 5K/6mos service then change the oil yourself. you will get a free oil change at 10K/1yr service. if you go in for the 10K/1yr and they see you never came in for the 5K/6mos service will have to explain. go with the free service for the first 2 years then DIY from there on out.

Amsoil or Redline? Most of the time I just order online the fluid. I’m starting to order the 0W20 synth engine oil online. Mobil 1 is great because it’s everewhere, but there’s better (slightly) oils out there.

Like I said my new favorite

Agreed, it’s good to take it in.

But, here’s the thing, they don’t check the diff and trans fluid and a lot of other things, so it doesn’t matter. It goes to 25k so if your rear diff or Tcase blows (and there have been some) it’s on you no matter what. Actually, that may be to 60k let me check.

Whichever the case Toyota care is to 25k miles.

The scheduled maintenance manual for my 2015 says "replace engine oil and filter" at 5k. I assume the same thing applies to your truck. You are entitled to get free (or you can say pre-paid) oil changes for 5 times under Toyota care. If I were you, I would ask the dealer why they are not willing to do it.

I did my last oil change by myself and spent about $35 (oil plus filter). $35 x 5 = $175. If you do not trust a dealer and you do by yourself, that is one way. But $175, I did use Toyota care:)
