Problem is, what is their process like 5-10 years from now when there will be a huge influx of used batteries that need to go somewhere?

their whole system is upgrading , they are currently building spoke and hub locations in North America and Europe in anticipation of greater volume , not a problem , its an opportunity

If i recall Ford is building their own recycle/repurposing facility. Tesla repurposes them for Megapack utility backup and home PowerWall systems.

Capitalism will not be the same if the governments and regulators along with the greedy corporations forced away consumers' ability to choose.

I’ve seen so many articles in auto news along the lines of “Toyota faces certain doom unless new CEO focuses on electric vehicles”

isn’t Toyota the second largest automaker in the world?

they didn't become that by irrationally going all-in on fads.

Agree completely. Toyota understands that most of the poorer parts of the world cannot afford the required electrical grid buildout it would take to make BEV's a practical alternative to ICE vehilces. IE - dude driving his kids to school in the backwoods of Nepal ain't going to be rolling around in a Tesla anytime soon lol.

Toyota is a global vehicle manufacturer and realizes lithium powered BEV's are a first world solution to CO2 emissions generated from vehicles. As such, they also realize that the solution to vehicle-produced CO2 emissions will be a multi-pronged approach and ultimately HFCEV's have a place at the table for resolving the CO2 problem vehicles present, especially in "rural" parts of the world & after we begin to run out of easily accessible/cheap lithium in the mid 2030's.

There's also value to be had in letting your competition pay the premium associated with the R&D required to be first to market, especially on an expensive endeavor like standardizing vehicle battery technology. Keep in mind Toyota has been producing electric vehicles in the form of the Prius for nearly 30 years now. Once a battery standard has been landed on by the majority of the world, they'll simply purchase the batteries & drop them in their new Prius without batting an eye.

Battery recycling will be a big deal in the future as more and more EV’s hit the end of their battery life but right now there’s not much in the way of recycling batteries as the industry has to be able to make money from recycling. Factories ain’t free, at least not in a capitalist economy.
