I don't understand what's so bad about CVTs, they make more sense to me for something like a commuter vehicle. They're certainly more efficient.

An automatic sucks anyways. CVT is more efficient and uses the power more effectively than a traditional AT.

Wouldn't want it in my truck, but my Altima has it and it's working so far. And mileage is the cats ass.

My girlfriend has a CVT on her 2008 Nissan Rogue. She just crossed 190,000 miles and it's running like a champ. Also super fun to drive it. What is the implication for trucks though?

Apparently lots of manufacturers aren't even using CVTs to their full potential because it just feels to weird to drivers to have the engine running at some constant RPM.

you can't push alot of torque through a CVT.

I would've definitely considered the electric model of the Tacoma had it been available.

I initially really hated the CVT in my Subaru but after 3 years it has grown on me. I guess what stands out the most is when going up hills is it is constantly gaining power with no weird shifts. I think if tuned correctly they are a good transmission IMO.

Electric is good. It has good low end torque.

but CVT's can't handle torque so untill we figure out how we can do that it won't happen.

Correct. But if they could make a robust cvt, I’m ok with that. Even if they decide to take on a project like this, it will be years and years down the road.

agreed. The design of a CVT is limited to the strength of the band and the tune. The tune they can fix but not the band... pushing the limits of physics.

A different CVT that is not our current conventional two cone system will appear one day with gears is the way to go.

The CVTs in Subarus are really great these days, especially the one they’ve paired to the 2.5L in the Outback. That whole vehicle rides like a cloud. Super quiet, sips gas, and punchy when you want it to be (from the computer-fixed “gear ratios”)

Still, I’m sticking with my MT Tacoma haha

Even though I knew it wasn't the case, my heart still couldn't help but hope that Toyota was going to start spec'ing RTT's on their vehicles.

Not too keen on a CVT, but I'll take an 8sp ZF trans.
