OK.. I'm pretty techie... but this is making me pissed.

I picked up my Tacoma a couple weeks ago and had them install a dash cam (Genuine Toyota Dash Cam .. lol)

OK, I read the manual and then brought the book to the truck to try and connect the camera to the app on my phone.

Well I followed the instructions and troubleshooting and additional steps from the internet and nothing will work. The direct WiFi will not show up (and no there is no wifi button on this model)

I took the SD card out and tested it on my PC and it is recording ..

I'm at a complete loss at this point .. other then going back to the dealership and asking them to look at it.

Anyone have any experience with these?

I was unaware that Toyota made cameras. :cookiemonster:

Does the unit have the Toyota brand on it? I wonder who actually makes them.

One of my cameras, a Rexing, is a tricky bugger. I have to put the camera in wifi mode (in the second menu,) start the app, quit the app, make my phone rescan for wifi, connect to the camera, then start the app again.

Few cameras run wifi-on as default. If the camera has a screen and menu, you have to find it there and turn it on.

It should be on by default, but the name of it is random and doesn't state Toyota. I don't have one but I remember seeing it on another forum. IIRC the password is in the manual. Also you need to be inside the truck.

OK. I went to the truck to make sure.

It is indeed a Toyota branded dash cam. I took pictures but this site is not working with me.

The manual says it runs wifi on and should be discoverable via your phones direct wifi menu.

OK went to the truck and it is a Toyota branded dash cam.

It's an official add on .. on the Toyota build it website

Manual says it's wifi on and should be discoverable in the wifi direct screen on your android .

Yeah it's a super random xxx name that should show up according to the manual .. but it's not showing up at all in wifi or direct wifi

I'm unfamiliar with that one, but I do know that my Android phone can be finicky. Have you tried turning phone wifi on and off? Also, when I'm in my garage it's especially difficult because my phone keeps wanting to auto connect to the house router before pulling up a list of signals.

    Lol! Thought of this all..

Forgot all other networks .. turned on airplane mode and only had wifi turned back on .. tried away from the house where there shouldn't be anything in range of my direct wifi .. I'd unplug the dashcam but can't see where it's been wired into the truck .. it shouldn't be this ridiculously difficult to do a direct wifi set up .....

i use an iphone so there must be a similar solution on android.
if the camera is not broadcasting its SSID, it won't be in the discovered network list.
on the iphone, you can try "other" networks (a better term would have been "hidden").
Then you are prompted to type the SSID of the network ie camera. If located, then you enter password etc.
Do the instructions state what the SSID is or did the installers give you an SSID to use? You may have to type it in the first time you connect.
It is possible the installers thought they were doing you a favor by hiding the SSID (ie. made it not discoverable
so people on sidewalk don't poke at it).
    just a guess..maybe lucky.

I re read the book and there isn't anything about the SSID listed. The password is the serial number and insee that .. but definitely nothing along those lines ..

Canuckistan pesos. The dash cam is a Toyota Canada accessory. Oddly enough it isn't plug-n-play - requires tapping into existing wires with scotchlocks.

    Yes Canadian dollars (lol)

It was totally an impulse add on .. I wanted one on it the day I drove it off the lot. This was the easiest solution. 700 dollar useless piece of plastic right now to be honest. I'll be showing up at Toyota tomorrow to see if they can figure it out .. cause I can't figure it out!

The minute I found out it wasn't plug & play, I ordered a Blackvue on Amazon...

Anyway, take it to the dealer for warranty service. Worst-case scenario they replace the camera.

Impulse buys are the worst. This is why I take a bowel movement before I go grocery shopping. Helps me stay focus on what I need.
