I had to show Driver's License and proof of insurance before I could drive the Used FJ I just bought, so it's not that unusual...

Getting the info prior to test drive is normal in my experience. Otherwise you can just threaten the salesman to get out of the truck and drive off with a free truck.

Selling your info is not cool and probably illegal.

It's pretty common for dealerships to require the customer to provide their driver's license, current insurance, and contact information before they go on a test drive.

I visited 3-4 dealerships when looking for my '18 and them asking to make a copy of your driver's licensees is fairly standard. Their insurance company most likely requires it.
That seems reasonable to me as they don't know anything about you yet you are taking off in a $40,000 vehicle they are on the hook for.

As far as them wanting to know your life history; none of their business.

Aside from financial info and SS, yeah, what else is there? They required my phone, email, and DL (which is a photo ID with current mailing address, lest we forget), and two years ago, they shared or sold that info to companies that thought it appropriate to call and email me with vehicle-related solicitations. If that info isn't safe, then no, there's no way in hell I'm sharing it with a dealership again.

I went straight to a massive used car dealership outside of town, asked them to drive a year-old Tacoma TRDOR, they grabbed the keys no questions asked, and we went for a 15 min drive. It shuddered on the highway and had a leaky rear axle with only 19k miles, so I passed.

They always ask for your name, address, phone and drivers license before you drive a $40,000 car off the lot.

    Wait. What?

Are you suggesting that it is "ok" to ask someone you never saw before in your life for their name, contact info, AND check to see if they are a licensed driver "before" handing them the keys to a $40k truck?

Wow! That is pretty crazy!! They should just leave the keys in the trucks!

    pretty typical.

Ask them for a copy of their driver's license so you can make a copy as well for insurance purposes.

I had a Nissan dealer in town here that I stopped at to look at the Titan XD Cummins when they first came out. They had a key request form and wanted all my info name, address, email, phone, ssn, income, financials etc. Just so they would unlock the door so that I could look inside, I wasn't even planning at that point to drive it.

I refused to give ssn, financials etc and ticked the sales guy off so He went to talk to the manager.

At this point I had already wasted about 30 min and was ready to leave so when he went to talk to the manager, I walked.

I was halfway across the parking lot to my Tacoma when the Sales managers (2) I assume called at me, saying if I ever treated their sales guy like that again they were calling the police.

I just jumped in my truck and left and put that dealer on my do not sponsor list.

I guess that refusing financials b4 look around is a crime.

DL and proof of insurance is customary. As others said , set up a gmail junk mail account and give them a recent spam caller phone number if you want.

It is rather nuts. If I were to run a dealership I wouldn't waste time with that. I would be throwing keys out left and right, to anybody who wants to test drive. Hell, they can take it out on their own. What could go wrong?

Those are my kinda test drives...me and the vehicle alone. Few years back I almost traded my ‘13 F150 on a new ‘15 F150, dealer let me have it overnight, that’s a test drive

True story: Portsmouth Ford, huge Ford dealership in NH used to keep the keys in all their vehicles. New and Used. All the keys, in all the vehicles.

You could wander around their giant lot and when you saw a vehicle that interested you, all you had to do was start it up, and drive it to the main building where a 20-something cutie took your info (w/clipboard, leaning into the driver's window) and off you go. Was weird but pretty sweet.

I will not buy a vehicle, new or used, that I’m not 100% comfortable with. Although I’ve got to say, 5 mins into the test drive, I basically felt like I already knew the truck. It’s stance and handling feels almost exactly like the ‘06 Gen2 I used to have, even though this truck is equipped far better than the old one. The rest of the time I spent on the test drive, felt similar to getting reacquainted with an old friend.
