I've read on some forums how people don't like using the Toyota/Denso or Denso oil filters because the filter can is able to touch the surface of the filter 'housing' (or, adapter, the cast part that the filter seats against), causing a mark or slight scratch just beyond the sealing surface.
I use the Toyota 90915-YZZD3, tightened 3/4 turn, and mine looks good, very minor mark possibly, but I don't see where it could ever cause significant damage.
I have 327k on my 4.0L. I like the Denso o-ring, pre lubed, and it's OEM Toyota.
Anyone notice an issue using these filters and damage to the filter housing, or adapter surface?
    Thanks.

Honestly I don't think most of us think about it to often.

Fact is you are using a filter that was specifically designed and built to work with our pick-ups and was approved by Toyota. As long as you are not leaking oil, it's probably just fine.

Thanks, I wouldn't have thought of it except when researching opinions on the quality of filtration of the Denso filter I came across a couple articles where people complained about the Denso 'torque stopper' feature.
Just was gathering opinions. Thanks again for the reply!

The ''mark'' is outside of the actual O-ring sealing surface and not a big deal in any way.

I work with NG and O rings tend to be the sealing device unless it's actually a doped thread or a wedge type seal, people cannot understand that the O-ring is the actual sealing part and the threads merely bring the O-ring into position against the sealing surface. It's why people have to reef on O-ring parts to get them apart, the think the threads are part of the ''seal.'' They aren't.

If you haven't had a leak there in 327k and 16 years, why worry about it now?

I've only owned it 2-1/2 years, not sure what filters have been used by previous owners.

So that is how the filter housing looks like without the towing package . My housing doesn't have that wall so I can fit the large Wix 51515 (Fram PH8a) filters. Yours can take the Wix 51516 (Fram 3600) filters that are the same diameter as oem but 1.4 inches longer.

Is the pic supposed to be showing anything of concern? I've used stock for every oil change except one in 195K miles and I've never had an issue.

    Nope

I don't see anything in that pic that would cause concern

I agree, that's why I posted the picture of mine. After reading how some people complained that the Denso filter can make a mark in the sealing surface (outside of the actual o-ring sealing surface), I wondered if others had an issue with this. I couldn't see that it would ever be a problem.
