Got that out of the way....

Dealer SOURCE trucks that are "close" to what people "order" but they do not build special orders at the factory level. HAVE to find one already built to the specs the buyer wants. They will mark the truck "sold" BEFORE the port adss their mop and glo as they did mine. but the truck was already allocated . Because my dealer was quick they snagged the allocation before it had a VIN and marked it sold. I won't get it until the next couple weeks. More than a month after "ordering" Took them a few days to actually FIND one.

I have a backstop of a Limited to be delivered to another Dealer in November if my truck is not what I ordered. (wanted the rare FP JBL added)

It depends where you live, we have to deal with southeast toyota, so we cannot technically factory order a truck. Other regions can. Read about the history of southeast toyota if you are curious.

This is not true! A good dealer will be able to order exactly what you want before it's built. A dealer did it for me on my 13' because I wanted the all weather flooring that wasnt pre-allocated to any dealer, you could only get it through special order.

The way dealers do it is close to what O.P. described. They took one of their own allocated trucks that wasn't built yet, but as close as possible to what I wanted, then they went into the computer system and changed the color and added the all weather flooring before the allocated truck was ever built. This specific combination with the all weather flooring would not have been built or allocated anywhere in the country if I hadn't had them change their order.

I'm in the northeast and went theough a dealer in weatern PA. Baierl Toyota to be specific, who is supposidly the largest dealer in my tri-state area. By the way it didnt cost me a cent more to order it this way than to take one off the lot, just a three month wait and got it at a couple hundred under invoice paying 80% cash down with no trade.

I'm not arguing whether you did or not. In the southeast we cannot. The dealers here do not get the vehicles direct form toyota, they come from Southeast Toyota Distributors. There is not a direct link to the factory. The dealers here may be able to allocate a vehicle with the specs you want, or have the vehicle modified at port to get what you want.

If you put in a zip code that falls in the SE Dist. area you don't even get a vehicle builder, they let you select from packages already available.

Got to Toyota and type zip 28201 and try it.

Nah. You're wrong. Toyota already has planned what it's going to build. You can only "custom order" if you work for Toyota. The all weather mats and running boards and junk like that are port or dealer added so they hardly count as Toyota "building" them. I consider a factory build piece as long bed or short bed, premium and tech packages etc.

For instance if I want a Black Limited premium, no tech, jbl, with tow package and Toyota was never planning on building it that way then I'm shit out of luck unless I work for them.

I have a DCLB 4x4 tech/premium no jbl tow package in MGM on "order". Toyota is planning to eventually build this type of truck, maybe 2% of all builds are this so its more rare and I'll have to wait but it was already pre planned to be built.

    Maybe I'm totally wrong. Meh.

Ok buddy, your going to tell me I don't know what happened with my own truck?

I wasn't talking about all weather mats, I am talking about all weather flooring. No carpet in my truck, same as FJ rubber flooring. Maybe you should do a little more research before posting non-sense on the internet!

Search this very site for Tacoma all weather flooring, and you can find pics of what I'm talking about. Not even sure it's offered anymore, in newer trucks, but I sat with my sales guy and the lady who orders vehicles for that dealership while they changed an allocated vehicle with a vin, that wasn't yet built from spruce mica to NBM, and added the all weather rubber flooring (carpet delete) before it was built.

According to you there was all weather flooring added. That's probably not a factory thing and a port thing. There's a difference. Hey, if you're happy and your dealership has you convinced they can work magic and you're willing to pay more money then more power to you.

Speaking of nonsense... Look in the mirror "buddy".

Also, the guy is right about the gulf states being different.

Just going to open up my ignore list now...

Like I said don't make posts on assumptions unless you know. You're spreading miss information. It's not a port thing, my factory all weather rubber flooring was installed at the plant in baja mexico.

There is no factory ordering with Toyota sorry but you are wrong. Tacomas offered rubber flooring and when you ordered your Tacoma they found one to your specs and deemed it sold that's it.

SET is a rip..They add $900 in mop and glo and Mats...This is why I ordered a truck before it got to the port so they don't muck it up with $699 in "free" oil changes...They do not sell Toyota backed Extended Service Contracts (Fidelity owned by Moran Family, Also SET Financing goes through Fidelity Financing as well Also owned by Moran Family) Which is why I don't finance and if I were to buy an ESC, it would be a ToyotaCare from a Toyota Dealer as opposed to distributor. The TC ESC covers more as well.

The Dealer gets pid for those included oil changes from Toyota. I get my oil changed at the dealer and pay anyway so they are not losing much if anything.

Used to be urban myths out there that Toyota could special make you a manual transmission DCLB. I really wish that myth were true.

On August 19th I sat down with the Internet Manager, Nang Ng, at Boulder Toyota and watched him remove floor mats, predator steps, and the exhaust tip from the build sheet on one of their allocations that he had already managed to get the color changed to what I wanted. The build was originally set for 9/9 but supposedly got pushed to 9/19. I picked it up last night. I got exactly what I wanted, nothing more, nothing less. IMO that's a special order. So I'd say they can do it if they wanted.

Exactly! If you can build it on toyotas site and they dont have any pre-allocated to be built anywhere with those specific options and in the exact color you want, they can do it and change vehicles before they are built. I had it done! What they can't do is a custom order that is impossible to build on Toyotas site. No long bed trd or vehicles before 2016 for example, you wouldnt have been able to custom order one like that in 2015 or earlier.

Sounds like some posters here believe everything their dealer tells them. 90% of dealers won't do it for you because they simply don't want the hassle and are trying to trick you into an easier order, or just don't care apparently and assume you will buy what they offer that is close enough.

If you can build it on toyotas web site and non are planned or allocated with those specific options and color combination, they can change a truck to exactly what you want before it's built. If you can't build it on the site, like a MT DCLB, then they arent going to be able to do that. You can custom order, but limited to what Toyota offers.
