Hi Folks,

Just met with my dealer about my 2022 SR5 Tacoma with 21K on. it to get qauotes for maintenance and extended warranty (VSA). Here are the qUotes that seem steep compared to what I've read here. Thoughts?

VSA: 8yrs/100K mi = $3900
Maintenance: 6/55K mi = $795

Any thoughts appreciated in advance.

 

^Yes, that's steep and they're charging you full price.

I know for years the argument has been, "It's a Toyota, it won't break so this is a waste of money," but with cameras, computers, and sensors everywhere, and the cost of labor going up every year, I've seen these platinum warranties pay for themselves many times over with simple little things like blind spot monitors or flickering dash screens. Not to mention higher ticket items.

I do think these are a smart buy and the benefit far outweighs the potential cost of failure out of warranty -- and it's only going to get more expensive.

Plus if you sell your truck, you can get a refund for the unused portion of your warranty.

 

Toyota's extended warrantt can be sold with the truck once. I had bought my 05 Taco used, 1 year old. Used the extented warranty to take care of the bent tailgate in 2009.

Jerry Johnson is the guy to talk to. I got a 10 year 100k miles Platinum, zero deductible, Toyota VSA for $1360, three weeks ago. A confirming email from him a day later. Paper work from the Midwest Superstore the next week. Waiting for the warranty book from Toyota (4 to 5 weeks).

 

Hmmm. Are you implying I can buy the VSA from ANY dealership? Will my own dealership honor it without a hitch? If so, what is the incentive to buy from original dealership?

 

That's exactly how it works. Unless you feel like giving the finance guy at your dealership a 2-3k commission check that is.

yes, you can get the extended warranty from any Toyota dealership. Yes every Toyota dealership will honor the warranty because it’s a Toyota warranty.

 

FWIW- when I started this thread I bought the 7yr/125k for $1250.
Probably going to trade my 23 pro soon.
They will refund me $956.

 

It's all part of the weird world of buying a car through a 3rd party like a dealer. Dealers set their prices for vehicles, repairs, products, etc. Some in competitive markets aim low for getting buyers in, others in a captive market raise prices because they are the only shop in town. It's all the same product though and the warranty itself is through Toyota, not the dealer. It's assigned to the VIN.

The warranty I paid something like 1,800 to Jerry was quoted in the 4-5k range at my local dealer when I bought the truck. They want to sell you on fear and make you think it all needs to be bought now to work. Think of it as nothing more than a profit center.

Waste of money! I got scammed into buying one (Zurich) on my 2016 (used) and they didn't cover shit. I've regretted it ever since.

 

How did you get scammed?

 

Finance guy came up with all these "doom and gloom" scenarios until I broke down. I know it's my own dumass fault.

My VSA warranty booklet came in the mail today.
This was through Jerry Johnson. If you want a warranty, get with him.
