I'm sorry, but I can only post the picture come Monday. I switched cars for the weekend at work. I tried taking the picture this morning, but realized I'll need to jack the truck up to get a good picture. I've got armor currently obstructing the shot.

If you're under the truck and find the catalytic converter... look adjacent to it by the frame. Water apparently pools in this area and rots the frame from the inside out... same area on the left side too. It was explained to me the problem predominantly persists here, facing toward the catalytic converter.

It might look perfectly fine on the outside, but if you wire-brush or slightly angle grind the paint off and use a punch or Phillips head screwdriver (solid core)... and a couple taps of a hammer... it might pop through... that's all you need to qualify... this applies to any part of the frame you can punch through actually. Good luck!

Question, if I take my truck (2010) in for the Leaf Spring Recall, and do not ask to have the frame inspected (for Rust), will the dealership do the frame inspection and CRC treatment even if I do not ask for it??

That's an interesting question. I really don't know the answer. I don't know if they're legally duty-bound to inspect any eligible vehicle that comes their way. I do know that when I brought my truck in for inspection, they notified me that several other items were eligible for repair/replacement, so they know who's eligible for what. I wouldn't be surprised if they went ahead and did the inspection, but I think you'd be notified of what they found before they did anything.

What condition is your frame in? No perforations? Do you simply not want the CRC stuff? Maybe if you tell them you don't want the CRC they'll have you sign a waiver or something. You might want to just talk to the dealership people about it right up front. Who knows what the legal niceties of the frame settlement boil down to...

My frame is quite good, was undercoated when new. And yes, I do not want CRC put over the top of current undercoating. I wouldn't want to sign a waiver and then be out of luck on a new frame if needed in 2022. So is my only option is to wait (to do leaf spring recall) until after May 21, 2019, which is when they stop the CRC applications???

Aha, I get it. As for signing a waiver, that was just a speculation on my part. Like I said, I really don't know what their legal obligations might be. Not sure how potentially dangerous delaying the leaf spring job might be. Perhaps 'watchful waiting' until 5/21/2019...

I took mine (09) in a few months ago for drive shaft u joint recall. When I made the appointment the lady asked if I wanted them to inspect the frame while it was in. I said no because I did not want them inspecting it and putting crc on it. Basically I have until 21 Feb. 2021 and I'm in no hurry. When I took it in the service manager said we are going to inspect your frame for rust don't worry it won't cost anything. I did not argue with him. After inspecting it he said they were "able" to punch a hole through at one of the key spots on the frame but it was not 10 mm. He told me to come back in 6 to 9 months and by then the hole would be big enough and I will get a new frame. He never mentioned crc and I did not ask about it. The whole crc thing has me nervous thinking Toyota might reject a new frame because I never got the frame crc'd. I plan on taking it back before 21 May 2019 for a new frame.

So I took mine in today and of course they said it looked fine but that was it. Aren't they supposed to coat it or something?

They inspected the driveshaft and said I had aftermarket Spicer joints in it but that it was fine. When I said I'd never changed them he said they had to be because they had zerk fittings. I guess I my truck was visited by the U-joint fairy at some point.

My truck has been in the shop waiting for its new frame for 7 weeks - they told me 10-12 weeks. Well, they just called me, and the frame is in, and they're going to get started on it probably mid-week next week. The only extra work is new front struts, and a new right front axle, since the broken strut messed it up, but no labor, just parts. Probably won't finish by the weekend, but whatever - it's still earlier than I expected. I can't wait. Neither can my dog - he thinks it's pretty much his truck...

So here’s a question, I’m looking at buying an 05 Tacoma, mostly the truck looks like it’s in pretty good shape but the frame is ugly and I wouldn’t be surprised if it were elegible for the frame replacement. Just curious if anyone has experience with a similar situation?

*edit* I had a brain fart. It’s 2018, and more than 12 years past the DFU. Probably not covered. I guess I could call a Toyota dealership and ask though.

I didn't see if there was an answer on this one, but I've had both the leaf spring and the frame recall done on my 06...When you take it in, they check for all potentially open recalls for your vin. They'll do the strength test on the frame and if they have to change it, they'll take care of the rental fees. Mine took 45 long days. Felt like forever, even though they managed to get me a truck through Enterprise.

I called the Toyota dealer today to check the status on my 2006, bought used a couple months ago, did other recalls, but dealer didn't mention frame...the guy told me I was 2 years too late to have the complimentary inspection (but of course they could check it for a fee).

Don't go through that dealership because they are wrong about you being 2 years too late. Either go to the Toyota owners website and enter your VIN or call Toyota customer service with your VIN to get your "in-service date" and to get the repair history. I also have 2006 with an in-service date of 10-1-06, you may still qualify for a free frame inspection.

Thanks, looked it up, my truck's first day of use was May 5 (Cinco de Mayo) 2006, sh*t out of luck; think I will now drink a beer and shot of tequila to celebrate finding out my truck's birthday!! I live in AZ, so hopefully don't have to worry about rust.
