    Hi,

Got a letter from Toyota today saying they want to inspect my frame and apply CRC undercoating if needed... Should I let them do it? Anyone else get one?

I wonder if there is a tech in my dealer capable of spraying my frame, I'm not kidding. I've had a couple of pitiful experiences under warranty and don't trust them, even messed up an oil change.

    Thanks DS

if they have the unit to perform the service they need to take a Toyota school course before they are
Allowed to perform it. It’s not just spraying. There is a lot of prep work

Reportedly it's not the best protectant. Unless the product itself has been changed.

However, I believe the exercise is required to be on record as having been done should your frame deteriorate the point of needing replacement.

    So you have a choice.

Maintain it yourself and take full responsibility.

Have them do it, give it additional maintenance yourself and have them as a fall back should it fail within the guarantee time.

Same boat as you and I also have my doubts. My experience with Toyota service leads me to say " I wouldn't let them adjust the spokes on my wheelbarrow". Are they going to do it right or seal up some moisture and surface rust and accelerate any future rust then when your frame is out of warranty it's garbage. Maybe someone whose had it done can chime in . I have to get mine done soon or no frame warranty but I do clean and fluid film my frame regularly.

    Your wheelbarrow has adjustable spokes?

They no longer apply undercoating. They apply a waxy product that helps to protect the frame from the inside

Look at it this way, you have everything to lose if you don't get it inspected. If you don't, you're frame is no longer covered for 12 years against rotting out. Do you really want to take that chance? Even if they do a crap job, the warranty is well worth the effort.

It doesn't matter if they spray it with Wesson Oil. What matters is that they then assume responsibility for 12 years from the first in service date.

I work at a dealership and trust me, this is the best process they've come up with yet. Even if they mess it up, they'll back your frame warranty up for 12 years. I simply cannot understand why anybody would turn this down.

I had my frame sprayed in 2014 and still looks good and done its job. Some things I have done that have made a big difference is:

    1. After your frame is coated, Let it fully cure before driving in rain/snow and washing the undercarriage.
    2. Using FF annually on top of their coating to keep it supple which keeps it sealed from oxygen and moisture getting to the frame.
    3. I have never used a high-pressure spray rinse on the coated frame and have only used garden hose pressure when washing the truck in the spring to get the salt off.
    4. Annually I use the Kellie Sport extension hoses to get the FF deep into the boxed section where many holes start (near catalytic converter), making sure it's well coated inside that area.

Thank goodness! That black crap they used was only a cover up to get it past the 12 years. The coated my 2009 in that stuff and it was causing rust underneath like mad.

I think Toyota realized that the salt was passing through the frame holes under the front wheel wells and collecting in that boxed section near the catalytic converter, causing holes in that area. The coating on the exterior frame is really only for looks and has no practical value.

Basically, our frames rust from the inside out, so even after Toyota coats the inside of your front box section, it doesn't last forever and is up to each owner to renew that coating annually. The newer Tacoma has plugs in those holes under the front wheel wells to stop the salt/debris from collecting inside the boxed section.

Well, The last time I was there they found nothing wrong with a grease fitting, I know it was bad because I damaged it and ended up fixing it my self. Add to that they were supposed to change my oil every 5 K so I had them do that at the same time... They refused saying it was every 10K... I said the interval was 5K for conventional oil and they said I had synthetic... Two service writers got involved and one got kind off loud about it, a girl with manicured nails who obviously had not turned a wrench in her life. They asked me how I knew what kind of oil it took and said the oil cap says so... The girl said Toyota has not used conventional oil since 2011 so I asked her if my 2, 2011 Camrys took conventional..Absolutely not... well both of them do, they are V6's... They said oh, yeah, v6s do... WTF kind of engine is in my truck?? They changed the oil... So if they are going to argue about something that simple, I'm not sure I want them messing with my truck at all... I know I should get this done but I seriously wonder if they might mess something else up doing it...

    Thanks

I just got my undercoating letter in the mail for my 2017. According to that they still apply CRC.

I feel your pain - and have experienced similar stuff at a number of dealerships - Toyota as well as other major brands. The point I'm trying to make though is that if you do not get your frame inspected and / or coated, you are 100% SOL if your frame rots out within 12 years of the truck's first in-service date. Replacing a frame (and all of the other parts that get replaced along with it) is a seriously expensive job. Do you - or anybody else - really want to be on the hook for that kind of money? And trust me, Toyota will be quick to point out that you opted out of the program if you try to get them to replace the frame. If you're really that uneasy about the dealership you went to - and I would be too - why not go to another one?

There’s really nothing they can mess up. There not taking anything apart. They are cleaning the box section of the frame and spraying some corrosion protection inside and putting on some plastic caps. Then they will note you had the prevention done so if you have a hole in your frame from rust they will replace it.

If you don’t do it and you get a hole your SOL.

But I understand what your saying about there competence.
