Toyota installed an aftermarket lift kit from amazon instead of TRD on ordered truck.

Also...total side bar...people that strapped for cash SHOULD NOT be buying a new, $40k truck. Much less leasing it. If you don't have $2k in cash for the lift you really want, you should not be financing anything. Period. I'm pretty sick of hearing "poor us, school costs too much, rent costs too much" all the while driving new vehicles and having a new iPhone every year. Wise up people.

Entertaining reading in this thread by some of the comments.
Bottom line, OP had a lift of some sort installed by a dealer on a new truck that they are leasing to him.
Said truck now has a non functioning sensor that is a big part of Toyota Corp. selling point. (TSS).
If the dealer installed the lift, reguardless of what type and let the truck leave with a mis-aligned sensor then to me that show a total lack of competence in the dealer. Buy the incompetence shown buy the dealer, I totally believe they intended to not install the TRD kit as asked.

Comparing used stock OEM parts to an aftermarket lift is apples to oranges. If you bought a new Tacoma, and installed an aftermarket lift, and the dealer could show that lift in turn caused a defect that would otherwise be covered under warranty, the dealer could deny warranty coverage. For example, you installed a 3” lift and left the UCAs stock, and had premature wear of suspension components that now require replacement a year or two in.

It’s not like installing a modification invalidates the whole warranty, it’s situationally dependent.

And in this case, the dealer installed the aftermarket modification, which makes things pretty interesting.

In absence of the paperwork all we know is the OP has a case of butt hurt. What we don't know is if the OP was a willing yet unknowing participant that has a different view of the activities the next morning during the walk of shame.

Viewing Toyota's webpage and "building a truck" doesn't have a damn thing to do with what goes on inside the dealership. I can guarantee that it's not uncommon for a car salesman to know that the customer is assuming things that are not true.

    Check build thread!

Entirely correct, but I'd also add in the fact that some places in the world offer better tax writeoffs for leases vs finance.

This reminds me of that South Park episode HumancentiPad:

not even close to the point, as that was a warranty repair, not a brand new lease…

    But I digress.

A vendetta or crusade to show the world how scummy a dealership they are is in the end, not worth it.

    that was the point.

I 100% agree that the dealer should fix the sensor, but I don't think we have gotten enough info about what the OP signed up for in his sales agreement to determine that the dealer pulled any sort of bait and switch. The TRD lift is not cheap, and it has a Toyota part number associated with it. If I was signing a contract in the finance office, I would not sign it if the agreement just said "Lift Kit...$1200". Same thing with the running boards and tires. I wouldn't sign it if it didn't say "Predator Step #PT925-35162...$$$$"

It is hard to tell from the pictures, but the steps look like the actual predator steps and not a knock off, and unless he asked the dealer to install BFG KO2, the Wildpeak tires are good tires. The tires are the best example, because if the lift was to accommodate the larger tires, I would hope the agreement stated what tire and size to put on the truck, and didn't just say "tires"

LMAO at how seriously some people take the internet.
This is either a troll, or @corymiiller is learning a valuable [expensive] life lesson. Ya’ll aren’t gonna save him from himself by yelling at each other on a truck forum.

I would add that there is another option here and the one that I would start with. I'd go back to the dealer and talk to them. Clearly there is a gap between what the dealer did and what the OP was expecting to be done. It happens all of the time in business. And, yes, that is why we have contracts in place but the fact that we have a massive legal industry is proof that even that is potentially not clear and certainly not the end of the story.

If I were in the OPs shoes (thankfully I am not and while I am fairly certain that I would not be, hey, you never know), I would go back to the dealer and in a very calm manner note that I am not happy with what was done and ask them to work with me to see how we can remedy the situation in a mutually beneficial manner.

Before I look at any other options I would want to know what the position of the dealer (at the Manager level) happens to be.

OP, have you tried that as a first step?

I wish you luck. I am not one of those people who claims to know everything, sues at the drop of a hat, blames others for buying cars at costs they cannot afford and yells at people for not reading a contract. The challenge now is will the dealer work with you to a positive or acceptable resolution? Best of luck to you ... don't be scared away by the forum or any negative comments ... please take the time to post back how this gets resolved (hopefully in your favor). People can learn from your situation -- and that is one of the main values of this forum -- learning from each other.

In all seriousness, this thread and the "Did I buy a Lemon" thread are kind of in the same place. Life is hard, and you can't depend on anyone else to make it happen for you.

    Ok, so couple things.

    1. I plan to keep the truck so I want it to be correct. I am leasing it in the event I want to get rid of it in 3 years I can just do so. They didn't quote labor on any parts installed so that was never a question. Hopefully an aftermarket lift will not effect me turning it in without charges.

    2. The We Owe attached is the ONLY item that had the prices paid for any equipment added. Note they did not state prices and were very vague on what was being installed> You don't walk into an Oakley store and ask if they are real oakleys made by oakley. That is just not reasonable. A reasonable person would not offend the dealership by asking them if they are putting on OEM running boards or not same with the lift kit. I attached the build sheet which is the same as my invoice, but the truck was a total of $47K which included tires.

    3. The sales sheet itself lists nothing but a total price due to it being a lease, it does not say anything about equipment on the lease agreement. Just a total price.

    4. The reason I added a lift to a rental / lease vehicle is because I may keep it, plus my GF stated to me I wouldn't be happy without a lifted truck and told me to get it just to make sure I was happy with it. I drive a lot of country roads that a non lifted truck could present issues with during different times of the year, Snow, Mud, Etc.

    5. It is about the monthly price, not the total. If the dealership says they will add certain things and it will add $50 to your payment you can say yes or no. At the end of the day you dont even own those parts they are returned with the vehicle to the next owner. Keep in mind they can make their money back when the vehicle is traded back in by selling it with a lift kit on it already. Basically they can charge me and the next owner, or at least it would make the truck easier to sell for them.

We Owe attached and Build Sheet.
