Technically, the corn used for ethanol production is still used for food. After the ethanol is produced your left with dried distillers grains. The distiller dried grains are then blended in the feed for livestock, which then becomes food for people. The dried distiller grains are more nutritious than soy bean meal and is about 1/2 the price. Also don't forget livestock love it(especially if its wet) and would choose it over grass or corn straight from the field every time.

Another product is the CO2 from the fermentation process is captured and used for anything uses C02 like carbonated drinks, dry ice, or it may have even been used as an assist gas in the laser that cut out the body panel for your tacoma.

Also, the the ethanol plants are starting to capture the heat produced to heat boilers and generating electricity to help power the plant.

So no, we aren't just burning food for fuel, but I imagine all the anti-gmo and environmentalist forgot to tell you all that.

If there is a shortage of food then why does the world waste about 1/3 of its food supply each year? Have you ever considered that is not a food supply issue but a logistical issue, a political issue, and a consumer preference issue that is creating the waste? Using or not using ethanol in our fuel will not solve or have any effect on the situation. If you think using that land to grow something other than corn is going to change something, then the argument will just circle around to the beginning of this paragraph because we currently producing more than what we can use. Adding more supply will only increase the waste unless we can actually get the food in the hands of the people that need it.

What "special" fertilizers and pesticides are used exactly? I'm sure you have the ability to produce or find in nature, all the chemicals and fertilizers you might use on a "organic"/"naturally grown" crop. Or are you saying organic farming doesn't include the use of synthetic chemicals? Or that the chemicals allowed in NOP production dont have the similar health or ecological risks as those used in conventional ag? In case you aren't familiar with NOP regulations, here is a link(start with sub part G): https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-i...29a8c9bd968b6&mc=true&node=pt7.3.205&rgn=div5 Oh, and don't forget to check out that list of Non-Organically produced products that are Allowed in Organically labeled products(205.605), and the list of synthetics that are allowed in organic livestock production(205.603).

Hopefully I didn't ruin anyone opinion on how wonderful organic and naturally grown food is and that its the solution to everything. I'm not against organic or naturally grown farming practices. I've actually experimented with it myself and are currently partnered with a organic recycling business(we convert organic waste into top soil, compost, and mulch instead of letting it rot away in a land fill). What ticks me off is when people demonize conventional ag without actually understanding it. If you want to buy ethanol free fuel and organic food, fine, that's your choice and I'll respect it. You'll never hear me say you shouldn't buy organic. I'll defend both sides depending on the argument, because there are positives and negatives to both sides. Just don't fully condemn a side because one is not fully better than the other.

But back to the main topic.

I cant see how Toyota could be held liable for using soy based products. If they were that would open a door for basically every company to be sued when an animal destroys their product. Why could I not then sue the manufacturer of my couch after my 6 month old lab shredded it? If they used corn or soy based polymers in the fabrics then my puppy must have thought it tasted good and wanted to eat it. Had they used 100% petroleum polymers then I'd still have a couch right? I'm sure it didn't have anything to do with leaving a lab puppy home alone while I was at work all day! (disclaimer, I dont and never have had a dog. Just a hypothetical situation) Personally, Id rather not contribute to the sue happy society that thinks they are entitled to everything.

    Work in progress...
I liked that information about he fertilizer and all. I didn't know that the grain was used as feed after fuel. I agree that most produce ends up wasted because of logistics.

Just had some rodent damage repaired on my 2017. Check engine light came on for a cam angle sensor out of range. $900 to fix out of warranty.

I didn't feel the $400 they would cover after my $500 deductible would be worth the time and possible future rate increases (aka hassle).
