The Japanese automaker said the sales suspension includes the following models: the 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009-2010 Corolla, the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2009-2010 Matrix, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundra and the 2008-2010 Sequoia.

This seems completely retarded to me. They're shutting down production for half their vehicle line up because a few gas pedals stuck??? How many times has this actually happened? And why the hell is it so hard to figure out (if there really is a problem) what's making a gas pedal stick?? It's not an efffing transmission for frig sake, how many parts can go wrong with a gas pedal/throttle assembly???? Sorry just ranting...How come Tacomas aren't on the list btw?

because people who drive tacomas, for the most part, are smart enough not to get their pedals stuck in their floor mats, or are able to thouroghly asess the situation and act accordingly in order to not cause an accident........

yah, idk why i said "some 08's" thats just what the news title said, so i used it to.

but i know the gas pedal thing was a big issue, and i guess toyota decided it wasn't just the floor mats that were causing the problem. So it's a good thing their addressing the problem.

I'm sure they're stopping those specific models and years because of design specifics in the throttle or some component of the gas pedal assembly?

    Thanks :D

They're still attacking the wrong issues. I'm afraid to take my truck to the dealer tbh... they'll cut my shit up.

i'm actually surprised they don't know what the issue is....unless their not admitting it?

but i feel like if you design a car, you would know where to look if it starts having issues like that?

I figured this much. If the Tacomas were having a problem though, wouldn't it make sense to stop production on them too? Something doesn't add up with this whole thing.

Now I'm confused? So they still make and sell the 08'?? Not to mention the 05'Avlon??

What else older models was Toyota still producing? I'd love to buy a Brand New 85' Toyota truck, if they haven't suspended the production of that truck yet??:headbang::D:D

Maybe it's just a financial decision - i.e. the profit margin is large enough to support an eventual recall of all tacos projected to be built during the otherwise scheduled stoppage timeframe. Perhaps the stoppage has more to do with the economy than the recall but is being bundled as a smoke screen to help soften the blow to their stock price. Who knows.

Tonight's news segment said the gas pedal may be the cause for 16 deaths and over 2000 crashes. So its more than people actually think.

i hate to be an ass but people really need to learn what to do in emergencies like that.
    put it in neutral
shut off engine but leave ign on to still be able to steer
use emergency brake to stop vehicle

I believe it is 8 models not just 08's
Many people are not auto enthusists and the only reason they have a car is transportation.
Many do not have any idea what a car can or cannot do.
We are enthusists and spend a bunch of time learning about and working on our trucks/cars.

Toyota has to do things to protect themselves from the lowest level owner.

I agree the requirements to drive are not nearly strict enough.
Driver training should be more than a written test and a lap around the parking lot.
This is what they have to protect themselves from.

Before the drive-by-wire accelerator pedals came out, this wasn't a problem.

I doubt it has anything to do with the floor mats. I figure it has to do with the electronics within the drive-by-wire system. Anyone ever pull one of those fancy accelerator pedals apart? There's a wire plug connector and a bunch of 'wipers' that look to be like a resistive potentiometer type design.

Electronics can have glitches. There can be bad contacts that create a temporary glitch that tells the ECU that the gas is depressed when it actually isn't.

Seems as if Toyota needs to go back to the drawing board on this one. Interlock the gas so if the brake is depressed, it cuts fuel to the motor? Have it so if the accelerator fails, it fails-safe rather than wide-open-throttle?

Those would be serious redesigns and re-calls, hence why Toyota needs to take a time-out and figure how to rectify this with minimal impact to their bottom line #'s.

    That's my theory anyway.
